Update 1:45 p.m. PST: The US Geological Survey has downgraded the magnitude of the Aleneva earthquake to 5.3.
Two moderate earthquakes shook the Alaska Peninsula late Friday and early Saturday, the US Geological Survey announced in emailed alerts.
The first struck at about 11 p.m. AKST with a preliminary magnitude 4.9. The USGS later adjusted the magnitude upward to 5.9.
The second earthquake struck at 7:58 a.m. AKST and given a preliminary magnitude of 4.4 but revised a few minutes later as a 4.1.
The first earthquake was described as 56 miles northwest of Aleneva, 66 miles northwest of Port Lions, 66 miles south-southeast of Kokhanok and 239 miles southwest of Anchorage.
The second was measured 59 miles east-southeast of Chignik, 64 miles east-southeast of Chignik Lagoon, 72 miles east of Chignik Lake and 438 miles southwest of) of Anchorage.
