while such conceits are not tolerated in every other human endeavor.

Sure, lots of admirable people identify as Christians. Doesn’t make their beliefs reality based. In fact, most of what we find admirable about people are Enlightenment era ideas they hold that sit opposite of what passes for knowledge and morals in their holy books.
