The Stay Home for Thanksgiving Movement [View all]

Thanksgiving has its roots in historic myth. However, I do think it's one of my favorite holidays because it doesn't involve the purchase of anything much but food - and gas to get to the food if you're traveling to the feast.

I think it's beneficial and appropriate for the nation to choose a day to be thankful, a day to gather with loved ones for a shared meal, whatever that means to you.

I also realize that even if it's Thanksgiving some people must be on the job. I worked a few Thanksgivings in healthcare; I have to get gas traveling to see the folks so I'd like to know the gas stations are open on the holiday; I sure hope cops and firefighters and nurses and air traffic controllers don't all take the day off.

But I do think it sucks that large chain stores are opening on Thanksgiving to sell shite. I would not shop retail on this day, because I think non-necessary businesses should do their employees the favor of letting them have the day off to be with their families.

It's my opinion and it won't change. You are free to disagree.

If you agree with me, there are folks who have started a little movement to encourage people to stay home ( from shopping ) on Thanksgiving. Here's one website devoted to the cause:

Hope all Duers have a pleasant holiday season. Let the War On Christmas Begin!
