There are already variations that have mutations to the protein spike. The current mRNA vaccine is solely based on the spike protein encoding and would therefore be ineffective due to ACE2 receptor binding. We do not yet know the vitality of these mutants (too early), with any hope they will be reduced and fizzle out. The more people that are infected, the more mutations we will have - this is a fact. Influenza generally mutates much more rapidly that any in the Corona family. The US is currently beginning an uptick as of this past 9 days, if you have not been paying attention.
Silver linings are for suckers. Not everything has one, and when they are expected, everyone becomes disappointed.

One thing to consider is the elderly are getting vaccinated so hopefully there will be less
