In reply to the discussion: Am I the only one who DOESN'T feel like this election is in the bag for President Obama? [View all]NYC Liberal
(20,136 posts)70. Nothing is ever "in the bag", but Romney is sliding downhill very, very quickly.
His campaign is incompetant. I know we may not be used to having an opponent being this incompetent, and of course we had the stolen election of 2000. But the Republicans are not omnipotent and they are not gods. Yes, they are very capable of running an awful campaign. Yes, Democrats are capable of running an incredibly good campaign. And that's what's happening. Past elections have made us skeptical, so we are waiting for the other shoe to drop. But that doesn't mean every time we're winning there must be some super-secret nefarious Republican plot lurking just beneath the surface.
Is Romney planning an October surprise? C'mon, of course he is. It doesn't have to be fact based. It just has to be damaging.
No, I don't believe so. Or at least, if he is then I don't believe he or his campaign has the capability of putting together some genius plan to be sprung a week before the election. It's good to stay alert and not take anything for granted. But Romney and his campaign are completely and utterly lost. They are incompetant. If they were anywhere near capable of pulling off a successful "October surprise", they would not be in the hole they're in right now.
The "deluge" started in April. They've tried one line of attack after another and nothing has stuck. Why would it now? Why would the Romney campaign suddenly turn into Mensa after months of totally laughable follies, gaffes, missteps, and amateur mistakes?
Don't take anything for granted. As you say, fight it all the way to November 6. But let's also not be so paranoid that we turn Romney into an evil genius that he isn't.

Agreed. He has a nice lead in registered voters, but not in likely voters. The latter is very close.
