Trump Slams GM as U.S. Workforce Shrinks to Detroit's Smallest Automaker [View all]
U.S. President Donald Trump criticized General Motors Co. for shrinking its U.S. manufacturing presence, which has reduced the companys unionized workforce to the smallest among Detroits automakers. Trump: "General Motors, which was once the Giant of Detroit, is now one of the smallest auto manufacturers there. They moved major plants to China, BEFORE I CAME INTO OFFICE."
Bloomberg News reported GM employed fewer United Auto Workers-represented employees than Ford Motor Co. or Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV. The president ordered GM to start moving back to America again.
GM has announced more than $23 billion of investments in U.S. manufacturing operations over the last decade, which it says is more than one-fourth of the industrys total in that span.
By calling attention to GMs manufacturing presence, Trump has added to the pressure the company will be under at the bargaining table later this year.
