Hanford Officials Hid Leak Evidence From Advisory Panel

by SUSANNAH FRAME / KING 5 News

Updated yesterday at 7:49 AM

A government-chartered advisory panel was told last September that materials spotted outside the inner wall of a tank holding radioactive waste at the Hanford Site were possibly the result of a "carbonate buildup," “cross-contamination” or "rainwater leakage."

"We've seen a lot of things and they don't point to any one thing," a senior U.S. Department of Energy official at Hanford told the group on Sept. 7, "so that's why it's hard to speculate what it is."

But internal emails obtained by KING 5, written by the government contractor carrying the multi-billion-dollar contract to manage the tanks, show that tests conducted weeks earlier had already confirmed that the materials found in the safety space of the double-shell tank were highly radioactive and matched the chemical makeup of waste contained in the primary tank.

On Aug. 13, results of a scientific analysis showed samples taken from the space contained high levels of two radioactive isotopes -- Strontium-90 and Cesium-137. Smaller traces of Plutonium-239/240 and Americium-241 were also detected. In addition scientists analyzing the sample found traces of potassium -- a unique marker to this specific tank (found in one other double-shell tank at Hanford).

Brazilian Prisoners Knit Their Way to a New Life

NTDTV·Published on May 17, 2013

Brazilian prison inmates take up knitting needles to help propel a local business to success.

Full Story:

Needles in hand, inmates at a Brazilian penitentiary are knitting their way to a brighter future thanks to a local businesswoman who was short on staff and needed to boost production for her clothing line.

Twenty prisoners at the Ariosvaldo Campos Pires prison are taking part in the Flor de Lotus (Lotus Flower) Project. Inmates are trained to knit and crochet for a local fashion design company that then exports the products to the United States, France, Japan and other countries.

The idea launched in 2009 when fashion designer Raquell Guimaraes looked to increase production for her Doiselles line of knitwear as demand surged in foreign markets.

{Raquell Guimaraes, Designer}:
"This workforce, I loved the story of going to a penitentiary."

Guimaraes teaches the inmates the art of knitting and crocheting, giving them a valuable skill set and work experience that they can then use upon their release as they look for employment in the outside world.

The prisoners are paid a starting salary of 75 percent of the minimum wage in Brazil, though their pay can increase depending on how much work they produce.

Guimaraes estimates that about 100 inmates have taken part in the project since its inception more than four years ago. They currently have openings for 15 new knitters as some current participants prepare for freedom.

Feds Delay Approval Of New Monsanto Crops Over Environmental Concerns

Biotech giant Monsanto faced a surprising setback after federal authorities refused to approve a new generation of genetically-engineered crops that could survive an unprecedented use of herbicides.

Monsanto was awarded a big win on Monday by the United States Supreme Court, but another federal ruling made only days earlier brought some comparatively bad news to the biotech giant.

The US Department of Agriculture announced Friday that they’ve ordered additional environmental impact statements (EIS) for herbicide-resistant crops that have been waiting for federal approval. Now Monsanto and the chemical company Dow will have to sit anxiously and await the results of those assessments before they are given the go-ahead to sell genetically-engineer plants that have raised serious environmental issues.

At stake is the future for a variety of corn, soybean and cotton crops that have been genetically-engineered to resist two heavy-duty pesticides, namely 2,4-D and dicamba. Both Monsanto and Dow have been hoping to get the go-ahead to sell these crops, but ordering further testing will set the release date back to perhaps 2015.
