Coast Guard Announces Safety Rules After Deadly Boat Fire

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Coast Guard has announced new safety rules following a deadly blaze that killed 34 people on a scuba diving boat off the California coast more than two years ago, including installation of fire detection and suppression equipment.

The Labor Day 2019 fire aboard the Conception off Santa Barbara marked the deadliest marine disaster in modern state history and led to criminal charges and calls for tougher regulations for small passenger vessels.

The new interim rules will take effect over the next two years. In addition to the fire systems, owners of boats with overnight passengers will be required, among other things, to provide better escapes from below deck and use devices that make sure a night watchman is alert and making frequent rounds.

An investigation into the disaster blamed the Conception’s owners for a lack of oversight and the boat’s captain for failing to post a roving watchman aboard the vessel, which allowed the fire to quickly spread and trap the 33 passengers and one crew member below deck. Captain Jerry Boylan and four crew members, all of whom were sleeping above deck, escaped.

American flag stolen from an Army veteran's home in Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — In a city that deals with violent crimes each day, minor offenses are often less reported. For one fourth-generation military veteran, calling in a stolen American flag was the last thing he thought to do despite feeling personally affronted.

“It’s part of living in any city really, some of it, but then when you kind of cross that line and start taking something like a flag from someone’s house, it’s kind of like a little bit more escalated,” said Brett Vuyovich.

The American flag was ripped down and taken from Vuyovich’s home in broad daylight. One of his neighbor’s caught it on camera.

“Instantly, all my neighbors were concerned when they realized it they were like, ‘what happened to the flag?’” he said.

Pastor calls out 'extreme rhetoric' of Tennessee lawmakers after Planned Parenthood arson

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A Tennessee pastor is calling out lawmakers after a Planned Parenthood facility in Knoxville was intentionally burned down on New Year's Eve.

One faith leader in Nashville, Rev. Dr. Donna Whitney, says lawmakers are using "harmful" and "extreme rhetoric" against women's healthcare to bolster political agendas.

On Dec. 31, 2021, a Planned Parenthood clinic in East Tennessee went up in flames. Fire investigators determined Thursday the blaze was intentionally set. Officials are still looking for the suspect.

Whitney is a member of the Pastoral Staff at Metropolitan Interdenominal Church of Nashville. She says using violence that could result in loss of life is contrary to the Christian belief of valuing life.

Supreme Court questions A.G. Schmitt's standing in vaccine suit

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Supreme Court heard two cases on Friday pertaining to the Biden Administration's COVID-19 vaccine mandate, including one helmed by Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt.

The case, Biden v. Missouri, initially began in November, as Schmitt, also a Republican senate candidate, launched his third lawsuit targeting the vaccine mandate. That third suit focused on the requirement that all healthcare workers and other recipients of Medicare and Medicaid be inoculated against COVID-19.

The nine justices questioned the Biden Administration's counsel on the legality of the vaccine requirements.

"Could you please tell me whether this is unprecedented in terms of what [the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services] generally does?" Justice Sonia Sotomayor asked at one point.

As they should, Schmitt is just a horse's behind doing nothing but grandstanding to get more attention drawn to himself for his Senate Campaign.

Jefferson City (MO) Fire details ways to prevent winter home fires

JEFFERSON CITY — The Jefferson City Fire Department ran a record 5,000 calls last year and has already responded to 100 calls since the start of 2022.

The cold weather generally triggers an increase in home fire alarms. Jefferson City Fire reports half of all home fires happen in December, January, and February.

“You’re seven times more likely to have a fire during that season," said Jefferson City Fire Division Chief Jason Turner. "Stoves, wood stoves, supplement heating devices, space heaters, candles, the holidays, all those things kind of contribute to what those three months statistically show across the nation as an increased risk of fires within the homes."

The department reports 1 in every 5, home fire deaths involves heating equipment.

Army Officer Relieved of Command, Facing Discharge over Racist Social Media Posts

A lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve was relieved of command in 2020 and is now facing removal from the force after he peddled racist opinions to his troops and peppered his social media accounts with a consistent flow of outlandish posts attacking public officials that his own lawyer described as racist, inflammatory and in poor taste.

Lt. Col. Michael Spillane, a medical officer with the 7207th Medical Support Group based out of Webster, New York, wrote a memo to soldiers under his command in June 2020, warning them of the "medical crisis created by China" and that "peaceful assemblies have turned into riots, looting, and shooting."

It was a memo full of typos and half truths laced with partisan wink and nod warnings about Democrats and minority-led protests amid a reckoning of racial justice, a highly atypical memo from an Army officer to his troops. Spillane's commander, Col. Jeffery Wood, later described the memo as offensive and inflammatory, in documents reviewed by Military.com.

Gas Gap in Europe Drives US LNG Exports to Record High

Sky-high European demand drove U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to a record in December, Refinitiv data showed, with winter supply worries set to sustain orders for the fuel.

About half of the record U.S. LNG volumes shipped last month went to Europe, up from 37% earlier in 2021, data from Refinitiv and the U.S. Energy Information Administration showed.

The gains reflected soaring demand for the home heating and industrial fuel that pushed prices in Europe and Asia to record highs. The United States has ample and cheap supplies as its shale oil and gas boom in the last two decades led to domestic production that has exceeded U.S. demand by about 10%.

Vessel tracking data showed about 7.15 million tonnes of LNG were shipped last month on 106 vessels, up 16% compared to 6.14 million tonnes on 89 vessels the same month a year ago. That topped the previous record of 6.51 million tonnes set in May.

Navy Boots First Batch of COVID-19 Vaccine Refusers

The U.S. Navy has discharged a first group of 20 sailors who refused to get vaccinated against COVID-19, the service announced Wednesday.

The 20 were all discharged as "Entry Level Separations," meaning that they had recently enlisted and were booted within 180 days of beginning service. These separations mark the start of the promised consequences for active-duty sailors who refused to get fully vaccinated by the Navy's deadline of Nov. 28.

Officials previously have told reporters that they anticipate most sailors who are leaving the service will separate by June 1.
