On IVF, watch what Republicans do, not what Republicans say

When it comes to in vitro fertilization, the gap between the GOP's rhetoric and the GOP's actions keeps getting bigger. The risk of a backlash is real.

Around the same time, House Speaker Mike Johnson hedged on whether he believes destroying or disposing of embryos constitutes “murder.”

This week, some in the party went even further. The Biden administration’s Department of Veterans Affairs is trying to expand IVF access, and as an NBC News report noted, a group of House Republicans felt the need to push back against such efforts.

The letter, addressed to Denis McDonough, the secretary of veterans affairs, was signed by Reps. Matt Rosendale of Montana, Mary Miller of Illinois, Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma and Bob Good of Virginia, who said they had “a plethora of ethical concerns and questions” about the policy. ... The Republicans argued the VA’s policy expanding IVF access for veterans would be harmful to the embryos, which they said have “inherent humanity.”

The Republican lawmakers described IVF as “morally dubious.”

Also this week, the House Republican Study Committee — a congressional contingent representing more than three-quarters of the House GOP conference, including the entirety of the party’s leadership team — unveiled an ambitious far-right agenda, which included explicit support for the so-called “Life at Conception Act,” which experts believe would threaten in vitro fertilization......

The electoral risk is significant: Recent polling has pointed to broad public support for the fertility treatments, and every time GOP officials take steps in opposition to IVF, Democratic ad makers come up with new ideas.

Ronna Romney McDaniel Scrubs Twitter Account Ahead Of NBC Appearance

Who is surprised by this? Luckily, the internet makes erasing one's history hard to pull off.

Ronna Romney McDaniel, who recently became a contributor to NBC and MSNBC began to scrub her Twitter account of old tweets that attack MSNBC, mention Democrats, and more. For example, we have now learned that McDaniel scrubbed the below tweet where she called MSNBC's primetime hosts "propagandists" and attacked them for pushing "the Russia collusion hoax." The referenced tweet was from March 16, 2023, about one year ago from today.

What is Ronna trying to run from? Upon further review, McDaniel has also begun scrubbing her account of tweets that reference the word "Democrats" and "Biden." There is also currently nothing about "abortion" on her Twitter account. As McDaniel enters a new phase in her career, she may try to fool the American public on television, but folks, the internet is forever.

The familiar problem with Team Trump's line on Biden, stuttering

In 2016, Donald Trump publicly mocked someone’s disabilities, then pretended it didn't happen. In 2024, something eerily similar is happening.

There’s no shortage of important issues that will help define the 2024 presidential campaign, but over the last couple of months, an unexpected topic has come up more than once: Donald Trump’s interest in President Joe Biden’s childhood speaking impediment.

A Washington Post report this week quoted the Republican candidate’s team denying the underlying claim.

Trump’s aides contend that he ridicules Biden’s competence, not his stutter. “President Trump has never mocked Joe Biden’s speech impediment,” said adviser Jason Miller.

The obvious problem with this is that reality tells a different story. Indeed, as we recently discussed, just hours after the incumbent Democrat delivered remarks on the anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack, his Republican predecessor told supporters, “Did you see him? He was stuttering through the whole thing. He’s saying I’m a threat to democracy. ‘He’s a threat to d-d-democracy.’”

In other words, when Trump’s team denies that the Republican mocked Biden’s speech impediment, there’s video evidence to the contrary.

But stepping back, I’m not surprised that the GOP campaign lied. I’m not even surprised that the former president is a man of such weak character that he belittles those with disabilities......

If Trump is going to be monstrous about such things, shouldn’t he just own up to it?
