President Obama takes on gun violence in New Orleans speech

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/25/obama-takes-on-gun-violence-in-new-orleans-speech/

Days after the Colorado movie theater massacre, President Barack Obama on Wednesday forcefully spoke out against gun violence, making perhaps some of his strongest comments yet as president on the issue.

While the president said he stands by the Second Amendment and recognizes the traditions of hunting and gun ownership in the country, he told a crowd at a gathering for the National Urban League in New Orleans that there is work left to be done in tackling the problem.

"I also believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals," Obama said. "That they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities."

(snip)
On Wednesday, however, Obama emphasized a need for background checks and the prevention of "mentally unbalanced" individuals from obtaining guns. He faulted opposition in Congress for lack of progress made in reducing violence.

President Obama Renews Push to Reduce Gun Violence
(snip)
Going forward, Obama vowed to work with members of both parties to “arrive at a consensus around violence reduction, not just of gun violence, but violence at every level.”

Hi Truthseekers, Mike Malloy here.

We want to thank you all for your incredible show of support of our independent broadcasting efforts these three years we’ve been out on our own. It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve managed to survive without a parent network and the kind of infrastructure other radio programs enjoy, and that’s because we have a secret weapon – listeners like you who appreciate the unvarnished, uncompromised truth.

But now more than ever we need your help.

Progressive talk, especially the take-no-prisoners presentation I bring, comes with a cost. In simple terms, there are powerful forces out there who have targeted this program for destruction and without your assistance, they will win. If it is possible for you to sponsor an hour of the program, or purchase or donate a podcast, or make a paypal donation, it could make it possible for us to keep that fire lit a little bit longer. The stakes have never been higher for this program,

Truthseekers, and you can make a difference. We sincerely thank you for helping us spread the message you will never hear from the corporate media.

You are the reason for this program.

Hotter Than...
http://www.mikemalloy.com/2012/07/born-okay-the-first-time/

O come all ye faithful and gather at the River of Truth to be washed in the blood of the lamb and be born again (any you, silly, thought you were born okay the first time, didn’t you?)!

Yes, it’s Church Night on the Malloy Show and if you’re in the Southern part of the nation it feels more like Hell than Heaven these days, with heat indexes rising past the 100 mark. God must be pissed about something. He hath unleashed His wrath of unholy heat upon us! The pavement-melting, sweltering hell can’t be due to, say, global climate change, right? Must be Divine Anger about something.

Maybe he’s ticked because Dan Cathy’s Atlanta-based Chick Fil-A chain is failing in its attempt to stop gay folk from entering into legal marriage contracts. Or perhaps it’s due to the un-Christian efforts in Florida by Republican Governor Rick Scott to purge the voter registry of thousands of Democratic voters in an attempt to steal yet another Presidential election that has The Almighty seeing red.

Yes, the South is burning and Sherman can’t be blamed this time. According to our Brilliant Elected Leaders in Washington, it just cannot be due to global climate change . . . so it must be God, as Edward Flattau pointed out today in the Huffington Post:

Religiosity is sometimes used to promote a fatalistic attitude towards global warming and thus, pave the way for exploiting the earth’s natural resources with impunity.

A classic example is the assertion that climate is a “manifestation of God’s will and there is nothing we can do about it.”

One needs to look no further than the floor of Congress to encounter this expression of resignation that can’t help but warm the cockles of corporate polluters’ hearts. In a debate last year involving legislation that would have the effect of weakening anti-global warming regulation, Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., declared that “Democrats think we have more impact on the climate and the world than God does, and we don’t.” Her sentiment prevailed, and a Republican majority in the House proceeded to pass the measure (that mercifully met its maker in the Senate).

Even Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has experienced a convenient religious epiphany in addressing climate change and other environmental challenges.

“I don’t believe that the Earth and her ecosystem are fragile,” the broadcaster intoned. “The Earth is a remarkable creation and capable of great regeneration. We can’t destroy it, it can fix itself.”

On the contrary, humanity has demonstrated that it is fully capable of turning a plush environment into an ecological wasteland for generations, if not permanently. What of the lengthy list of species that have vanished due to destruction of their habitats by human beings? Limbaugh seems oblivious to the many areas around the world where the desert has overrun vast swathes of fertile land because of unsustainable agricultural practices and other human activity.

Another invocation of religion to bolster industrial exploitation was employed by President Reagan’s controversial Interior Secretary, James Watt. A devout Evangelical Christian, Watt used his faith’s belief that the world will be destroyed and reborn with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ as justification to pillage natural resources on public lands. Underlying Watt’s aggressive attempt to open previously off-limits national conservation areas was the rationale that it was pointless to worry about wilderness preservation or climate change when the earth could end at any moment? One might as well exploit what one could while the going was good. It was a mentality decisively rejected by a majority of the American people whose disapproval was instrumental in eventually forcing Watt from office.

Far from being helpless, human beings have the capacity to repair much of the environmental damage they have wrought, provided the degradation has not yet passed the point of no return.

A graphic example is in North Africa where grasslands on the fringe of the Sahara were reduced to desert because of overgrazing by herds belonging to nomadic tribes. An experiment was conducted in which the eroded grasslands were periodically fenced off to keep livestock out. Despite a lack of any significant rainfall, vegetation returned.

The appropriate religious inspiration we should glean from anecdotes such as this?

“God helps those who help themselves.”

Amen. But it’s not just the Southern US, The Good Lord must be terribly ticked at Greenland as well. Maybe He just regrets creating polar bears, decided to make ‘em go extinct. Or perhaps He’s not a Bjork fan?

Romney’s ‘We Did Build This’ Events Feature Businesses Built With Government Subsidies And Contracts

Romney’s ‘We Did Build This’ Events Feature Businesses Built With Government Subsidies And Contracts
http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2012/07/25/584751/romneys-we-did-build-this-events-feature-businesses-built-with-government-subsidies-and-contracts/

Today, the Romney campaign is hosting an entire series of campaign events based on President Obama’s misinterpreted comment about small businesses. While Obama’s full speech made a “no man is an island” argument, the Romney campaign has seized on the quote, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that” as evidence of Obama’s disdain for small business owners.

Romney, ignoring the fact that he has echoed this same sentiment on multiple occasions, organized 24 “We Did Build This” events in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Virginia, Ohio, Iowa, Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Nevada. At each event, local business owners are speaking about their self-sufficiency in running a business and how government is hindering their growth.

But, like the New Hampshire business owner showcased in Romney’s attack ad on the issue, many of these business owners have received significant support from the government, a ThinkProgress analysis finds.

The Tampa Bay Times reports on two more local businesses that benefited from government contracts, A.D. Morgan Corporation and Value Enterprise Solutions

40 Economists Say The GOP Has Abandoned Economic Reality

http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/07/25/584561/40-economists-republicans-reality/

A survey of forty economists from across the ideological and partisan spectrum has concluded that on some of its most cherished issues, the Republican Party has simply taken leave of economic reality. For instance, economists Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers noted that one of the results from the survey — run by the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, which is hardly known for a left-wing slant — is an overwhelming agreement that the 2009 Recovery Act (i.e. the stimulus) brought down unemployment. But GOP leaders have spent years roundly denouncing the stimulus as a failure:

And while there was a bit more disagreement as to whether the benefits of the stimulus bill outweighed its costs, the bulk of the economists surveyed came down in the “Agree” or “Strongly Agree” camps. Other points from the survey’s respondents worth noting:

The nation needs new revenues. Contrary to nearly every Republican, the economists overwhelmingly agreed that the federal budget deficit cannot and should not be closed without increased tax revenue.

Axelrod: President Obama didn’t ‘authorize’ anyone at White House to leak

President Obama senior campaign adviser David Axelrod on Wednesday insisted the president did not authorize anyone at the White House to leak the classified national-security information that has led to congressional anger and a Justice Department probe.

“I can tell you that the president of the United States did not leak classified information, as Mitt Romney suggested yesterday, and he didn’t authorize the leak of information, as Mitt Romney suggested yesterday,” Axelrod told MSNBC’s "Morning Joe."

(snip)
Axelrod said “strong signals have been sent” that leaks will not be tolerated, and said two U.S. attorneys and the Department of Justice will “get to the bottom of whatever happened.”

“The president will never, ever authorize the release of classified information, nor will he jeopardize the safety of the men and women whose safety he is responsible for as commander in chief,” Axelrod said.

Hundreds of protesters rally on steps of Pa. Capitol, set stage for hearing on voter ID law

Hundreds of protesters rally on steps of Pa. Capitol, set stage for hearing on voter ID law

Hundreds of demonstrators descended on Pennsylvania’s Capitol on Tuesday to protest a tough new voter ID law, launching a daylong political drama that set the stage for a state court hearing on a lawsuit seeking to prevent the law from taking effect this year.

The protesters — civil-rights activists, union members and others — chanted, waved signs and cheered as speakers portrayed the mandatory photo ID requirement as part of a cynical effort by Republicans to suppress voters turnout and gain an advantage in a presidential election year.

“They know that, when people don’t vote, they win. ... We’re going to stop it and stand at the borders of Pennsylvania and say ‘everybody in America has a right to vote,’” said Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale.

Hilary O. Shelton, senior vice president for advocacy at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, noted that even supporters of the law — one of the toughest in the nation — cannot cite any cases of voter impersonation in Pennsylvania.

Lawsuit against PA voter ID law going forward this week
On Wednesday, Pennsylvania's new voter ID laws will face a challenge in the state courts led by civil rights groups. The Justice Department on Monday launched an investigation into the laws, which make it more difficult for 758,000 mostly lower-income residents to get to the polls. The plaintiff in the state case is Viviette Applewhite, a 93-year-old woman whose ID was in her purse when it was recently stolen.

The attorneys defending Pennsylvania's laws admit that there have been no investigations or prosecutions of in-person voter fraud in the state. Furthermore, as guest host Michael Eric Dyson argued on Tuesday's The Ed Show, they do not know of any such investigation or prosecutions in other states.

"If you look at how poll taxes were used, they were used as obstacles to prevent poor voters from being able to participate," said Hilary Shelton, head of the Washington chapter of the NAACP. "Now you're paying a price—a dollar figure—to participate in the electoral process. It is indeed a poll tax."

Rick Scott’s Florida Purge Effort Cost Localities Thousands

Now that Gov. Rick Scott’s (R-FL) administration has obtained access to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database — records that Florida could have received months ago had it provided the necessary information to DHS — it has officially abandoned the error-riddled original purge list. But this move comes only after local governments were forced to spend thousands purging voters from the rolls.

The Scott administration now acknowledges that the 2,600-person list it once deemed “sure-fire” non-citizen voters is “obsolete.” As ThinkProgress reported, that list contained hundreds of eligible U.S. citizens.

But beyond inconveniencing hundreds of legitimate voters, the Scott administration’s reliance on that earlier bad list came with a heavy cost to already cash-strapped local governments. A ThinkProgress survey of six county elections supervisors reveals that that 2,031 letters they sent out, at the Scott administration’s instruction, cost them at least $10,000.

Averaged out, that comes to more than $5.14 per name and projects to over $13,000 in unnecessary costs to local governments. While this number may not seem huge, it doesn’t include the costs to the state government — or the opportunity cost of wasting local employees time on processing the purge efforts, instead of on ensuring fair and efficient elections. And the number is only going to go up with the Scott administration promising more purges in the future.

First Lady to lead U.S. delegation to London Olympics

The White House held a conference call on Monday to release the details of First Lady Michelle Obama's visit to London as the head of the U.S. delegation to the 2012 Olympic Games. Joining the first lady as part of the delegation will be former Olympics and Paralympics athletes Brandi Chastain, Dominique Dawes, Gabriel Diaz de Leon, Grant Hill and Summer Sanders.

“Leading our nation's delegation and traveling to London is truly a dream come true,” Obama said. “If anybody had asked me when I was 10, or 11 or 20 or actually 40 whether I'd be doing this I would have said not. Some of my fondest memories when I was young and not so young involved watching the Olympics on TV and cheering on Team USA and as part of this trip and my Lets Move! initiative to solve the problem of childhood obesity I decided that I wanted to turn that Olympic spirit and inspiration into action by using these games as a way to get more kids up and moving.”

The first lady will head to London on Thursday, and her official visit will begin with an informal breakfast for U.S. Olympians on Friday. Later in the morning, Obama will host a Let's Move! event for the children of American service members stationed in London as well as American and British students. Athletes such as David Beckham, Nadia Comaneci, Shawn Johnson, Carl Lewis, and Dikembe Mutombo will also attend the event.

(snip)
On Saturday, Mrs. Obama will meet with Samantha Cameron – wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron – before attending Olympic events. And on Sunday she will deliver remarks at a brunch for the U.S. Olympic Committee, U.S. Olympic alumni athletes and Team USA supporters at the U.S. ambassador's residence. Before departing on Sunday afternoon, the first lady will greet American military families stationed at Mildenhall Air Force Base.

First Lady calls Olympic trip a 'dream come true'

It's no surprise that Mrs. Obama is planning a Let's Move! event to take place during her upcoming trip to London for the Olympics.

The First Lady will lead the presidential delegation to London, accompanied by Olympic and Paralympic stars Brandi Chastain, Dominique Dawes, Gabriel Diaz de Leon, Grant Hill and Summer Sanders.

"Leading our nation's delegation and traveling to London is truly a dream come true," Mrs. Obama said on a conference call Monday afternoon. "If anybody had asked me when I was 10 or 11 or 20 or actually 40 if I'd be doing this, I would have bet not.
