Israel Confirms Killing Arafat Deputy In 1988
JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel acknowledged Thursday it killed Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's deputy in a 1988 raid in Tunisia, lifting a nearly 25-year veil of secrecy and allowing a rare glimpse into the shadowy world of its secret operations.
One of the commandos was disguised as a woman on a romantic vacation, and one of the weapons was hidden in a box of chocolates.
Khalil al-Wazir, who was better known by his nom de guerre Abu Jihad, founded Fatah, the dominant faction in the Palestinian Liberation Organization, with Arafat and was blamed for a series of deadly attacks against Israelis.
Two of those involved in the operation that killed al-Wazir now hold high political office in Israel - Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon. At the time, Barak was deputy military chief, and Yaalon was head of the elite commando unit Sayeret Matkal. Their precise roles in the operation were not divulged, and both men's offices declined comment.

Las Vegas Jews Caught in Adelson's Shadow
By Josh Nathan-Kazis
Published November 01, 2012, issue of November 09, 2012.
In Sheldon Adelsons hometown, Jews are angry about the presidential election.
That contrasts with Jews in the swing states of Florida and Ohio, who will vote despairingly in this years race. In Las Vegas, theyll storm the polls. Audiences at community-sponsored political events here boo heartily. Partisan wars split synagogue listservs. Political lawn signs disappear in Jewish neighborhoods.
Some of the passion here is over the economy. But in the state with the highest unemployment rate in the country, the Jewish conversation is focused strikingly on Israel.
At the local Jewish Community Center one morning, a current events discussion group spent an hour talking politics and bruising each others feelings. One 78-year-old said that President Obama has disdain for Israel. A 70-year-old accused Obamas Jewish critics of racism and later stormed out in a huff.
