When Morals & Politics Cross, Conservatives Ignore Their Bible & Go In For the Kill…

When Morals & Politics Cross, Conservatives Ignore Their Bible & Go In For the Kill On a Religious Charity

By now we've all heard the story of how Paul Ryan and company “ramrodded” their way into a soup kitchen in Youngstown, Ohio this past Saturday, only to pose for a photo-op by washing pans that had been specifically requested by a Ryan campaign staff member after almost all the staff and patrons had left. The entire event was described by Juanita Sherba, St. Vincent’s Saturday coordinator for the dining hall. “It was the phoniest piece of baloney I've ever been associated with.” Ms. Sherba said to the local reporters for Vindy.com. “In hindsight, I would have never let him in the door.”

But that’s only part of the story…

The soup kitchen is operated by the Mahoning County’s St. Vincent de Paul Society. Located on Front Street in downtown Youngstown, deep in the heart of the “Rust Belt”, it is an area that was devastated when the steel industry began to vacate 35 years ago last month. The area has never fully recovered from the loss and the soup kitchen is still badly needed to this day.

Not only were there calls on Facebook threatening his position and the donations to the charity, according to The Huffington Post in a phone interview with Antel, hundreds of phone calls flooded their office, most of them anonymous. The effect of monetary losses have been big. “It appears to be a substantial amount,” Antal said. “You can rest assured there has been a substantial backlash.” He goes on to say doesn’t understand why donors would take out their frustration over the incident on those who can’t afford to pay for their own meals. “I’m a volunteer,’ he told HuffPo. “I receive zero compensation. Withholding donations is only going to hurt the over 100,000 we serve annually.”

There is substantially more in the article - examples of hatred and hypocrisy, as well as several ways to donate to this kitchen. You know, the right-wing almost never surprises me, and then I read stuff like this.

Off to donate what I can.

Hamdan conviction overturned (Final Update)

Source: Scotus Blog

The D.C. Circuit Court on Tuesday threw out one of the earliest post-9/11 military convictions of a terrorism suspect, putting in doubt the use of the commission system to try war crimes charges for events that occurred years earlier. The ruling by a three-judge panel voided the conviction of Salim Ahmed Hamdan, a Yemeni national who no longer is held by the U.S. military. He completed his sentence, and was sent home, but the Circuit Court said his case still involved an active controversy.

Hamdan, who often has been described by the U.S. government as a driver for Osama bin Laden, was convicted of the war crime of “material support for terrorism.” The Circuit Court, however, said that was not a crime at the time of the events for which he was prosecuted under a 2006 law – the Military Commissions Act. The panel said it ruled that way in order to avoid a constitutional question of whether the Hamdan trial violated the Constitution’s ban on ex post facto prosecution.

It was not immediately clear how far the ruling would reach for coming or other past prosecutions by military commissions at Guantanamo Bay. The same charge that was leveled against Hamdan — material support — has been made against several other detainees there. In fact, the government has relied heavily upon that kind of charge, on the theory that it would be fairly easy to prove.

Ironically, Congress had passed that law after Hamdan had won an earlier Supreme Court ruling, nullifying President George W. Bush’s creation — by presidential order — of a system of military tribunals for war crimes cases. The charges against him, pursued under the 2006 act of Congress, were based on alleged activities in Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001, when he was captured there.

Forbes: Ryan's Despicable Soup Kitchen Antics Perfect Metaphor For GOP Ticket's Disrespect For Poor

Ric Ungar writes another spot on OpEd in Forbes:

-snip-

And while the photographs and news footage would tell the story of Congressman Ryan as a caring conservative just looking to extend a helping hand, with each click of the shutter and roll of the video camera, St. Vincent was being put deeper and deeper in jeopardy of losing critical funding that allows their doors to stay open.

As Mr. Antal noted, “I can’t afford to lose funding from these private individuals. If this was the Democrats, I’d have the same exact problem.”

Upon learning of the mistake the campaign had made, certainly Mr. Ryan’s spokespeople came forward to apologize and set the record straight, right? Certainly the Romney-Ryan campaign made the effort to issue a statement that would inform anyone who is a donor to the charity— or considering becoming one—that, while their intentions were noble (false photo ops aside), they had inadvertently caused a problem for the soup kitchen and that nobody should hold the charity responsible for playing politics as that was not what had occurred. Surely they would have done this in an effort to help St. Vincent out of a jam the campaign had created, yes?

Nope.

You see, the GOP ticket—led by a man who actually wrote a book called “No Apology”— doesn’t roll that way.

Allen West: GOP Rep. Reportedly Asked Wife To Be His 'Porn Star', Demanded 'Non-Negotiable' Sex Acts

U.S. Rep. Allen West (R-FL) reportedly asked his wife to be his "porn star" in a hand-written letter from Iraq in 2003, detailing "non-negotiable" sex acts she was to perform on his return and ordering her to wear only two-piece bathing suits.

Former Palm Beach Post and Radar.com staffer Jose Lambiet published some of the contents of the letter on his South Florida site Gossip Extra, arguing the intimate details are news-worthy because the way the Tea Party Congressman relates to women has become an issue in his reelection race.

Lambiet said he exclusively obtained the letter written to financial advisor Dr. Angela West, whom the former Army Lt. Colonel married in 1989. Among the contents:

The congressman proceeds tells his wife he expects certain intimate acts upon his return that will be “the standard and it is non-negotiable.”

...Then: “Angela, I need to know, are you committed to being my porn star?

“I do not want to hear ‘no’ or ‘we’ll see about that.’ I want my fantasies to be with you. God has authorized you and you only as my partner for intimacy and that is what I want.”

My email to an Amazon seller.... How did I do?

Have a big birthday party coming up, and so I went off to find party favors. I love Amazon, so began there. After discovering what I wanted, and placing multiple orders in my cart, I looked to see what else the seller had. This is the email I just sent:

I need 144 Iron Maiden pinbacks for a birthday party, and so I found your listing which appeared perfect - I added these items to my cart: http://www.amazon.com/IRON-MAIDEN-Pinback-Buttons-Badges/dp/B003MC4Q7G and then went to see what else you were selling. I was taken to a page listing political buttons you sell - and most all of them were either Republican or Romney/Ryan pins. No big, I thought to myself, I am certain this seller doesn't limit his merchandise to one political party... I was wrong. So, for what it's worth, you lost my business. Partisanship is destroying this country, and in the instant case - it cost you a HUGE sale.

Just thought you might care.

So, how did I do? Oh, and does anyone know where I can get 144 Iron Maiden pinbacks real quick?

TIA!~

Kaweah church tied to possible consultant on anti-Muslim film

A militant fundamentalist church near Three Rivers has a connection with the man who says he was a consultant on the movie that sparked deadly attacks on U.S. diplomats in Libya.

The church at Kaweah -- it uses a lower-case "c" in its name -- is a rustic, one-story building off a rural foothill road just west of Sequoia National Park.

It's drawn some attention from local law enforcement, neighbors and the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups nationwide.

The law center linked the church to Steve Klein, who says he has ties to the movie "Innocence of Muslims." The Los Angeles Times reported that a trailer for the movie portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a buffoon, suicidal, gay, lascivious and condoning of pedophilia.

-----------------------------------------------
Ths SLPC has a HUGE article about this church (which btw, is less than 50 miles from where I live. It's a must read:

In a 22-acre compound at the southern edge of Sequoia National Park in California, a secretive cohort of militant Christian fundamentalists is preparing for war. One of the men helping train the flock in the art of combat, a former Marine named Steve Klein, believes that California is riddled with Muslim Brotherhood sleeper cells “who are awaiting the trigger date and will begin randomly killing as many of us as they can.”

“I know I’m getting prepared to shoot back,” Klein says.

At the head of the Church at Kaweah is Pastor Warren Mark Campbell, who sees yet another enemy on the horizon: the “New World Order,” that chimera of the conspiracists who populate the resurgent, antigovernment “Patriot” movement.

The tiny church has been well outside the mainstream since the early 1990s, when founding pastor Warren Lee Campbell (father of the current pastor) bought into the notion that churches should shun all government regulation and answer solely to God. Since then, the church has become increasingly radical, ramping up its paramilitary activities and forging alliances with an array of figures revered on the radical right — among them, militia and Patriot leaders, white supremacists, neo-Confederates, border vigilantes and Christian Reconstructionists, whose goal is to turn America into a theocracy based on the Old Testament. In the meantime, the church’s militia has gone from patrolling the banks of the Kaweah River to conducting joint exercises with Minuteman groups along the Mexican border.
