Religious leaders call for "Fast from Fast Food" to call attention to workers' low wages

The fast aims to draw attention to "Fight for 15" movement, which is advocating for a union and a minimum wage of $15 an hour for fast food workers. Religious leaders involved with the fast are asking people of all faiths to take a pledge not to eat burgers and fries between Feb. 18 and April 4. Interfaith Worker Justice, the advocacy group that's organizing the fast, is also offering an online program of daily reflections and prayers that relate to the push for higher wages. So far, 1,500 people have signed the online pledge to participate, according to IWJ.

The Fast from Fast Food is bringing a renewed focus to the role of faith leaders in curbing income inequality, one of the biggest social justice issues of our time. This modern partnership between religious organizations and social justice advocates comes out of a decades-long collaboration between the two groups. From the abolition of slavery to the Civil Rights movement, faith leaders have played a prominent role in pushing for social change throughout American history.

Now, there’s an added urgency to the efforts thanks to Pope Francis, who is drawing attention to rising inequality and the obligation of people of faith to help mitigate it.

“He’s just so clear about it,” said Sister Simone Campbell, the executive director of Network, a Catholic social justice lobby. Campbell is one of the religious leaders who has endorsed the Fast from Fast Food campaign. “A family should be able to be supported in dignity by the work of the parents, and the fact is that currently in the United States, salaries are not sufficient to allow families to live in dignity,” she said.

Catholics played prominent role in Selma

The voting rights demonstrations led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 50 years ago in Selma, Ala., are among the most significant events of the modern civil rights movement. They successfully rallied supporters of racial justice behind the need for government action to protect the right to vote long denied to African-Americans. The Voting Rights Act, described by many as the single most important piece of legislation passed by Congress in American history, was a direct result of the Selma protests.

Catholics played a prominent role in Selma, much more than in previous civil rights demonstrations. Never before had Catholic activists turned out in such large numbers. Now, on the 50th anniversaries of Bloody Sunday and the Selma-to-Montgomery march, it is fitting to honor those who participated in these historic events in March 1965.

Early in 1965, Edmundite Fr. Maurice Ouellet, pastor of St. Elizabeth's African-American mission in Selma, answered a knock at his door. He was surprised to see King standing on the front step.

"The Negro people tell me there is one white man in Selma who is black," King said by way of introduction, "and I want to meet him."

Kid wears 50 Shades of Grey costume to school for World Book Day

cola Scholes, herself a primary school teacher, criticised the school for its actions - arguing the costume was not worse than those of fictional serial killers.

“The cable ties were tiny and not enough to do anything with them," the 36-year-old told the Manchester Evening News. "We didn’t think there would be a problem.

“I got a phonecall home from the school saying the outfit was inappropriate and that he had been excluded from taking part or being in any of the photographs.

“Me and the teacher agreed to disagree and it’s not being taken any further, but I was disappointed for Liam that he’d been stopped from taking part and that he’s had a dressing down."

Woman sues restaurant for $100,000 after husband makes her dine alone on Valentine's Day

Bad service at a restaurant? Most patrons would stop giving the establishment their business, or perhaps leave a negative review on Yelp.

Not Kathleen Hampton. After experiencing what she says was poor service at an Italian restaurant in Portland, Oregon, she's filed a lawsuit for $100,000.

As first reported by Oregon Live, Hampton says she and her husband made reservations to eat at Enzo’s Caffe Italiano on Valentine's Day. At the last minute, her husband decided not to join her because, she writes in the suit, "he was still full from lunch." So she decided to attend by herself.

She sat alone at the table for two, amid what local news station KOIN 6 reports was a busy Valentine's Day crowd, but says no one would take her order. Instead, she says, she was asked to give up the table.

Edward Cardinal Egan dies at 82 (updated w/ NY Times article)

As archbishop of New York from 2000 to 2009 — the spiritual head of a realm of 2.5 million parishioners, an archipelago of 400 churches and a majestic seat at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan — the cardinal was one of America’s most visible Catholic leaders, invoking prayers for justice when terrorists struck on Sept. 11, 2001, and escorting Pope Benedict XVI on his historic visit to the city in April 2008.

In February of 2009, the pope announced that Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of Milwaukee had been selected to replace Cardinal Egan in New York on April 15, concluding a reign that had not been popular with many Catholics but had come to grips with hard decisions on church finances and had walked the line of Catholic doctrine against winds of change.

But a month before retiring, Cardinal Egan seemed to soften his stance on the centuries-old requirement of priestly celibacy by suggesting the church would someday have to consider allowing priests to marry. “I think that it’s going to be discussed; it’s a perfectly legitimate discussion,” he said on the Albany radio station Talk 1300. He added: “I think it has to be looked at. And I am not so sure it wouldn’t be a good idea to decide on the basis of geography and culture not to make an across-the-board determination.”

Dumb Criminals: Guy responds to his own Wanted photo on sheriff's Facebook page - arrested

Social media giveth, and social media taketh away, as the Butler County Sheriff's Office proved.

Andrew Dale Marcum, 21, of Lemon Township, achieved local internet celebrity Monday when he publicly defended himself against allegations from the Butler County Sheriff's Office in a Monday Facebook post.

However, tipsters learned of Marcum because of that defense, and they helped lead police to him less than 24 hours later.

The sheriff's office credited the anonymous tipsters for information leading to Marcum's Tuesday arrest, according to a Twitter post from the department.

Louisville, KY, smells like mildew - and no one knows why

There's a bad smell in parts of the Louisville, Kentucky, area but nobody knows where it's coming from.

Media reports say city crews have been trying for nearly a week to pin down the odor that smells like mildew, but so far they've had no luck.

Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District spokesman Tom Nord says the agency is doing its best to track the odor. Engineering manager Matt King says crews are driving around the city and searching the old-fashion way: with their noses.

Nord says dozens of people have called from different areas of the city that aren't normally associated with bad smells.

Dumb Criminals: Guy arrested for 9th DUI wearing "I do dumb things" shirt

The Texas man was initially pulled over and charged for the incident in November, but was arrested on a warrant on Thursday. Bell County officials reviewing the case ended up bumping the charge up to a felony after realizing that Gutierrez already had more than three DWI convictions, according to KBTX.

Police had a “good laugh” about his choice of attire, according to KCEN.

Man hides marijuana in a container marked "Not Weed"

A 21-year-old Lincoln man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana after deputies found a 16-ounce container labeled "Not Weed" under the front passenger's seat.

Lancaster County Sheriff's deputies stopped the driver near Eighth and K streets about 9 p.m. Saturday.

During a search, the sheriff's office found the plastic sour cream container with 11.4 grams of marijuana. The driver said it belonged to him and was cited.

Three passengers in the car were not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the sheriff's office said.
