(10,558 posts)I've also been saying for years that we need to stop shooting at each other in that foxhole. A simple search of my posts here at DU on this has rarely gone well. This war is not between supporters of this or that party it instead a war to retake power over our own democracy. If our economic model controls itself it also controls us. In our democracy rhe only thing that controls the citizenry has to be the citizenry. We The People have to be the final arbitor.

(39,909 posts)We sold everything, cashed in everything, paid the penalties,
and bought inexpensive, pristine property where we grow GMO and Toxin free food, keep chickens and Honey Bees. We live as independently and sustainable as possible.
Our goals are a continued yearly reduction of our Carbon Footprint,
PRODUCE more than we CONSUME,
and focus on local humanitarian issues (of which there are many in this area).
We keep one VISA debit/credit card at a locally owned bank.
We participate in a surprisingly well developed cash only Black Market, for goods, salvage, labor, used cars, car repairs, machinery, tools, home building supplies, farm equipment, and anything else you might want if you are willing to look for it and deal with the owner in a pleasant manner.
Wall Street can live or die without our money or our concern.
We've been waiting since 2006 for you to join us in our Nation Wide Strike.
So far, so good. Counting my Wife & I...that makes two so far.
How serious are YOU about bringing this out-of-Control corrupt machine to its knees?
The only reason it exists is that we let it.

(39,909 posts)a few years ago. I would send the link, but it gives our names and location.
DU is NOT the safe place it once was.
I am fairly sure it is not possible to "make a real living" on 1.5 acres.
That would depend much on where those acres are,
NEVER having a bad year, and owing nothing to the Bank.
We work HARD, own everything outright (no mortgage or payments of any kind) and ends don't always meet.
The last two years have been horrible for growing veggies (drought, heat, false Spring followed by a hard freeze that killed ALL the young fruit, Berry blossoms, and seedlings.)
It is not as "idyllic" as it sounds (my wife says I make it look and sound better than it really is.)
I tend not to photograph or write about the ugly, like the 4 point buck that was gut shot last year and managed to drag himself to our pond to die.
The late Summers are HOT...and boring. So are the long Winter nights.
We sometimes miss the people, crowds, amenities and luxuries of City Life. (We haven't been to a Movie or overnight Road Trip since 2006).
Once you get domestic critters that depend on you, and live close to a National Forest and the many predators, they must be protected 24/7. We generally never leave the cabin and stock unguarded.
One of us is always here.
In general, we learned that:
1)It costs twice as much
2) It takes 3 times as long
3)require 5 times as much manual labor
....to do ANYTHING.
We haven't regretted a single day.

(50,983 posts)I love to hear about it. I'm not physically up to that sort of lifestyle now. That doesn't change my enthusiasm for it.
About the closest I ever got was providing the family with venison every single year without fail. Now we visit the grocery store for everything.

(39,909 posts)We had a list of priorities for our property search, and WATER was in the top 3 places.
Without a steady supply of of clean water, it is not worth the time. We didn't want anyone living upstream from us, or uphill from us, so we had to do some looking.
We found inexpensive property in Arkansas with a great spring that runs cold, clear water 24/7 even during the major droughts of last year and 2012 when the Fire Departments were called out to fill people's wells and cattle tanks. We wouldn't be able to survive without that spring....best water ever.
Arkansas is a good state if you are looking for inexpensive property that includes its own source of cold, clear, Ozark Mountain Spring Water. The springs are common here, but not everywhere, so be careful...and find out if the spring is "year round". (If it isn't...its not a "spring"

Imagine, the corporations (Wall Street, the MIC) think it is just fine and dandy to usurp our democracy. We didn't give them our permission. They bought the media and the politicians. They used the media to cloud our vision.
