Bernie Sanders Makes Brutally Honest Point About Vets During GOP Debate

You can always count on Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders to speak his mind. His blunt disposition was on full display during the fourth Republican presidential debate on Tuesday evening.

On Twitter, Sanders lambasted the Republican candidates on an array of topics, from the minimum wage to Social Security. But his most brutally honest and pertinent point came on the subject of veterans and America’s failure to properly honor their service and sacrifice.

We already have the biggest military in the world, yet veterans sleep out on the streets. Will Republicans talk about this?

The US spends more on defense than any other country in the world and it excels at warfare. But when the people that fight its wars return home they often end up homeless.

the high suicide rate of the vets. The GOP could care less about the aftermath of war. It doesn't put money in their back pocket.

They are sickening.

Right on Bernie!!!!

You're too kind! Lost a son to suicide (AF veteran) while I was homeless (Army vet). I have a deep, burning, visceral disgust for these friggin' stickers and all lip service.

I appreciate the "thanks for your service" from folks but the words are very hollow considering what it's cost my family.

And both had/have significant scars.

For a time, I was living next door to this obnoxious right-winger who was all bluster about the superiority of the US military, but of course had never served a day in his life. No surprise, he had a giant yellow ribbon magnet on his Hummer. (Yeah, a Hummer in Silicon Valley.) So one night I snuck over and Gorilla-glued it on. A week or so later, when he tried to take it off to wash his vehicle, he was absolutely furious. I asked him what the fuss was, and he said some *#@&! had obviously glued it there. I innocently said, "I thought they were permanent. I mean, to show your ongoing support. Whyever would you want to remove it?" He just stammered, "Well, uh, yeah but...."

On a similar note of action...

I had a particularily tough day and I kept seeing this truck parked in my work parking lot. It was around 2010 and the sticker asked "How is that magical Obama working out for you?" kind of squirrelly snarky way. I wrote in Sharpie on it "GREAT! I LOVE HIM!"

I could only imagine the reaction, but it made me feel a little better if only for a minute.

It is disturbing on a couple of levels. The first and obvious level is that this guy thought it would be cool to put on his truck (he's also a ranked official at the fire department in Barnstable). The second level that's disturbing is that these stickers are being mass produced which means there are others out there that think it's "cool".

mean, sadistic people, who apparently enjoy inflicting pain on others -- more so than many
other nations. Could heredity play a role? Historically the English (and possibly others as well)
did use America as a prison colony at one time. Do we have a higher proportion of socio- and
psychopaths in the general population?

are quite a few who are socio- or psychopaths. Here is a list of the top ten
professions that attract the most psychopaths:

It's quite an interesting read.

It was during our foray into Iraq. Yellow or red, white n' blue ribbon magnets on the back of every SUV and Cowboy Cadillac on the road. Every "patriot" doin' their doody, right? Right.
I saw display cards of them for sale in a convenience store and looked close at the bottom of those displays..... MADE IN CHINA Shit - even simple printed magnets supposedly signifying patriotism - had to come from China. Of course, to the rubes buying and applying them - that irony was never even considered.

We have an American flag flying - 20 feet above our house. I replace it when it starts to fade. And I always check to see where my flags are made.

Come on Bernie. Even you should know that is a non sequitur. The Department of Veterans Affairs is not the Department of Defense. But I do agree that we should take better care of our Vets.
