The story of my Obama Speech Community Credential:
I was so proud to get my credential to see Obamas speech. As I go to business conventions from time to time, I have a collection of lanyards, and had attached the nicest one to my credential. That the event was moved indoors was a letdown, but I planned on keeping my credential as a souvenir forever.
Thursday, the day of the speech, I was cleaning out my van for my upcoming vacation. My neighbors son, age 20, came over to help. Nice young man. After some small talk, I asked if he was registered to vote. His reply: I plan to.
My credential on a lanyard looked impressive; I decided to bring it out to show him. He thought it was very cool. I could tell he was one step from registering to vote. I offered him my credential under one condition: that he register to vote. He agreed.
The following Saturday, he told me he and his girlfriend were in the mall the night before, that there were voter registration people there, and that he offered HER the credential to register with him. They both registered.
Jump to Tuesday, he came over. I asked if his girlfriend was going to keep it as a souvenir, his response: she doesnt have it anymore; she gave it to a girlfriend who promised to register. She doesnt have it either, she did the same. I dont know where it is now.
I feel great about giving away my keepsake now as Ill take registered voters over a souvenir any day of the week!
