...at Costco, we recognize that job creation requires time and investment and commitment to the long term. *** It Requires Companies that Plant and Grow, NOT executives who REAP and RUN. ***
We're proud that Costco pays the highest wages among our peers, that we provide benefit and health care plans that are second to none, that we've grown our business by promoting from within. So we're not just giving Costco people jobs, we're empowering them to build careers and support middle-class families.
At Costco, we know a thing or two about what it takes for businesses to succeed, for a company to do well by its shareholders and to do right by its employees at the same time. We don't want one set of rules for ourselves and another for our employees.
Business needs a president... who takes the long view and makes the tough decisions. And that's why I am here tonight supporting President Obama, a president making an economy built to last.
America needs to be a nation where everyone follows the same rules of the road so that small businesses can compete with the big, so that small businesses can become big, so that breakthrough ideas and hard work are rewarded MORE than speculation.
...Here's the thing about the Costco story: we did not build our company in a vacuum, we built it in the greatest country on earth. We built our company in a place where anyone can make it with hard work, a little luck and a little help from their neighbors AND THEIR COUNTRY.
I'm here tonight because Costco's story is the American story. Because it's a story that President Obama is helping millions of dreamers and doers to write anew for themselves. And I'm here tonight because I believe he deserves four more years to help us write the next chapter.

I thought his digs at Romney were JUST the right measured stroke -- especially from someone who worked hard to get where he is and heavily invested BACK into the company he built and the people who helped him build it, not harvesting to death it's very soul for every last cent of profit.
* note, one instance of 'our company' was replaced with 'Costco' for clarity

(11,648 posts)but I do it with my bicycle and trailer. It is a problem only with paper products. Those Costco size toilet paper and paper towel packages take up a lot of room and I have to break them down at the bike rack.

I am a big fan of the store, and now, I'm an even bigger fan of the company because of what it stands for and how it treats its employees. It really does start at the top. Jim Sinegal is a fine patriot.

I love Costco. I even bought some stock. Typical Costco...they gave me a deal that if I bought $100 worth of stock through Sharebuilder (and it didn't have to be Costco stock), they threw in an extra $40.
I can't wait to go shopping!

(13,297 posts)I know you don't need a membership to go to the optometrist and get contact lenses... and in many places they are supposed to not require membership for prescriptions and/or liquor sales (please do not mix those two!)

(13,776 posts)Our Costco pharmacy is the same way, and I would bet that the hearing aid place and optometrist are the same way. I think you don't need a membership card to eat there, and their food court is a cheap way to make kids happy if you're just driving by (the only snag is that it can take a while to find a parking space).

(5,364 posts)It's his favorite store based on proximity, selection and price. He always did grouse that "they're kinda' left wing though...." He still adores Walmart for their business practices and constantly sends me email forwards praising them, but he KNOWS Costco is the better store.
I do believe the cognitive dissonance will rot him from within-Or-Maybe h'll just go to Walmart just for spite.
I found it funny though just how ideological some can be. I mean Costco IS a runaway success and this should appeal to the right wing corporatists on that alone, but somehow the hatred of labor trumps even that!
Whoever invented this phrase said it best: "They'd rather sink and be right than swim and be wrong".
