DURHAM, N.H. -- A new poll shows that the improving economy has also raised President Barack Obama's standing in New Hampshire.
The WMUR Granite State Poll shows that 38 percent of New Hampshire adults think the country is headed in the right direction, while 50 percent say it's on the wrong track. That doesn't seem optimistic, but it represent a big jump from October, when 70 percent thought the country was on the wrong track.
And those numbers bode well for Obama's re-election bid.
"The big thing is President Obama has seen his approval numbers jump in New Hampshire over the last several months, despite -- or maybe because of -- the New Hampshire Republican primary," said pollster Andy Smith of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, which conducted the poll.
Obama has seen his job approval rating nearly flip from the last Granite State Poll in October, with 51 percent now saying they like the job the president is doing, compared to 43 percent who don't. Just 41 percent said they approved in October.
Smith said positive economic signs are the biggest reason for the shift.
"The economy is still the big issue that's going on nationally and in New Hampshire, and here we see the recent economic numbers in the last few months are starting to help," Smith said.
The poll of 527 randomly selected New Hampshire adults was conducted by landline and cellphone from Jan. 25 through Feb. 2. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

(19,060 posts)I think I am going to get involved more this year with the Democratic party. I really feel like this is an important point in history where not only the Democratic Party stands to reap the spoils of a November blowout, but that the party will become more liberal in the process.
This is an absolutely perfect storm against Republicans right now, people have seen what they have to offer and they don't want it, yet the Republicans refuse to change. They offer no new ideas and they are riding the train off the cliff.
We know there will be massive Democratic victories this fall, but I think we really have a chance to put the Republicans in the minority for a generation if we seize the moment.
