90 Days, 90 Reasons (to vote for President Obama)

90 Days, 90 Reasons is posting one essay a day telling people why they should vote for President Obama. Currently (Aug 26), they're up to Reason 19: Obama Turned Our State Blue.

The idea behind the 90 Days, 90 Reasons site, according to The Opening Salvo:

This time the bumper stickers are few. The HOPE posters are hard to find. There are no songs by will.i.am.

We are three months away from the presidential election, and there is a stunning lack of energy displayed by likely Obama voters.

Some who voted for Obama are disappointed in decisions he’s made, things he hasn’t done. And so millions of voters, the same ones who campaigned so fervently for Obama in 2008—the same ones who achieved history by not only overturning eight years of disastrous Republican leadership, but by electing the first African-American president—these same voters are collectively looking at this election and thinking, “I’ll sit this one out.”

//snip:

Then we had a revelation, which sounds less like a revelation and more like a plainly obvious reality: if this doesn’t become an all-hands-on-deck movement to re-elect President Obama, he will lose. And Mitt Romney, who has campaigned as the most conservative Republican candidate in history, will become president.

If ever there were a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face, it is this. Millions of progressive Americans, who brought Obama into office on a grass-roots wave of hope and idealism and the belief in the possibility of change, are now behaving as if, because Obama hasn’t addressed their particular pet issue, that the best way to express their dissatisfaction is to allow Mitt Romney to become president.

This website is worth watching, and worth telling your friends about. Too many people on DU are overconfident, assuming that Mr. Obama can't lose because no one like Romney. The danger isn't that people like Mittens, it's that many people inclined to support Pres. Obama are disillusioned and demotivated.

Edited to add -- Definitely check out: Reason 14: Because This is an Election With Existential Implications by Paul Simon (Yes, that Paul Simon!).

I see no signs or bumper stickers for either candidate. I have a sticker to put on my van and my husband already has one on his.

Why don't people understand that he couldn't get issues resolved because the Repugs wouldn't compromise at all.

It leads me to believe that Melissa Harris Perry was right! The double standard is in full force.

President Obama, while not perfect, is being held to a different standard and blamed for shit that is NOT his fault!!!

In fact I registered a formerly Republican voter to Democratic today. Everybody I talk to wants to vote for Obama.

One man pointed out to me that Hispanics are pro-Obama; African-Americans are pro-Obama; women are pro-Obama. That means most people are pro-Obama.

6. Today's reason: Corporations are not People, People are Better

Reason 21: Corporations Are Not People, People Are Better by Nate Mendel, bassist for the Foo Fighters:

I believe it's important to support President Obama's re-election because, among other reasons, he supports the idea that corporations should be held accountable for their actions through regulation, and should contribute to bringing down the national debt through fair taxation of their profits. Kind of common sense stuff, really.

Of course, Obama's opponent believes that the economy would be better served by business avoiding the weight of these responsibilities. Last summer, in response to a heckler at a rally, Mitt Romney defended the rights of corporations to enjoy limited taxation by reminding his audience that “Corporations are people, too.” Though he was referring to the shareholders that comprise a corporation, he's no doubt comfortable with the court's decision to grant corporations a sort of legal personhood, which allows for some constraints, like the right to be sued, but also many liberties, such as free speech.

It is almost certain that the next President will appoint a new Supreme Court justice within his first term in office. If Romney is elected, a current court of five people who think corporations should have rights and free reign on our democracy will become a court of six people who share this belief. Frightening concept.

On the other hand, if President Obama does the appointing, the court will likely overturn the 2010 Citizens United decision, reinstating restrictions on corporate campaign donations. He's up against this himself. Conservative groups alone, including many super PACs and corporate entities, will spend one billion dollars trying to defeat President Obama in the upcoming election.
