'Doing the hardest work in America': Bernie Sanders woos Hispanic voters
At Tucson rally, Democratic hopeful defends the undocumented part of the fabric of this country and declares gun violence must be brought to an end
With a Latino congressmans endorsement, a boys heart-rending story and the mellifluous sounds of a mariachi band, Bernie Sanders began a push to woo Hispanic voters at a rally in Arizona on Friday night.
As well as immigration reform, the Democratic presidential hopeful touched on gun control in the wake of last weeks massacre in Oregon and two more fatal shootings on Friday on university campuses in Houston and northern Arizona.
Despite his history of opposing gun regulation, Sanders called for stronger background checks and an end to the easy availability of assault weapons. We are tired of condolences and we are tired of just prayers. We are tired and we are embarrassed in picking up the paper or turning on the TV and seeing children in elementary schools slaughtered and young people on college campuses shot, he said.
I think the vast majority of the American people want us to move forward in sensible ways that keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them and cut down on these senseless murders that we see every week. ..............(more)

(9,497 posts)There is a lot of excitement for him. When H said of course she would send the border kids home, that was a blow. Both candidates not 100% on immigration, both candidates are pro gun control but only one is for the people.
He is speaking to the Latinos, I have always thought when they get to hear him, they will understand him. He is like a lot of the man of the people Latino leaders.
My grandmother came to this country from Mexico when she was 3. Her father brought her over the rails without documentation. He and his son dug ditches in this country for a living. The loved hard, worked hard and died young. My grandmother sat in the back of the class, shy but she learned English. She was the translator of the family. Still a lot of family in the first neighborhood they lived in and they are people just going to work, eating dinner with the family and having small parties for the celebrations in the back yards of their little homes. Bernie is and will continue to reach those Latinos. Mock him as you will, you two. But you don't know how he presents himself to majority of Latinos.
