2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWho will the Republicans nominate...?
If Reid's contention is true, or if there exists some other damaging information in Romney's returns, he may be forced to withdraw from the race. That would throw the Republican party into turmoil. But they will still need a nominee. Who do you think it will be, and why?
Will it be one of the other candidates - Gingrich, Santorum, Perry, Paul?
Will it be one of the wacko ladies - Bachmann, Palin?
Will it be some unknown or a media person - Rush Limbaugh?
If Romney withdraws, does that practically guarantee an Obama victory?
Has there been anything like this in American politics? Eagleton was a VP candidate, and that was disastrous enough.

(9,275 posts)It's Mitt, too much time and $$ invested. The Party will support him 100% enthusiastically and then throw him under the bus Nov. 7.

(2,514 posts)the 1972 election (more famous for Watergate)... George Mc Govern picked a Senator Egelton for VP... it was almost immediately revealed that Senator Egelton was seeing a pchyiatrist...Mc Govern was forced to replace him on the ticket.... this made the whole campaign look like a bunch of bumbling armatures.. the campaign never could get any momentum after the convention, and Nixon won in a landslide..

(25,592 posts)Otherwise the Republican party will be a thing of the past, if they come up with another psycho wing-nut to replace Romney. Remember, the saner Republicans are already jumping ship with the prospect on Romney on the ticket. There are still a few old style Republicans around that are in touch with reality. In that case, Obama could be in trouble.

(6,736 posts)I predict something, maybe his tax records, maybe something new, turns him into kryptonite. The GOP convention, under the pressure of the moment, nominates/drafts Jeb Bush, who quickly picks Run Paul as his running mate.
It sounds kinda crazy to me, but it's not like I'm putting money down on this.

(18,645 posts)The GOP brass have been priming the pump by tearing down Romney in public for the past few weeks.
The only reason they would do this is if they want their base to move away from Romney so they can stick someone else in there.
They are so desperate to get rid of Obama, and Romney's chances are narrowing every day so I'm sure they plan on dumping him.
Even Fox is turning anti-Romney.
A new nominee will energize their base and make an Obama victory less certain.
It might be the next Bush.
But there are some unheralded Republicans that they may pull out of their corporate asses as well.
