Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders
We call on the AFL-CIO, union members and working people everywhere to unite behind Bernie Sanders and elect the president Americas workers desperately need, the resolution said. The resolution strongly urges the national AFL-CIO to endorse Sanders.

Sanders once again is receiving peoples' endorsements instead of beltway support.

I really wonder about the psychological impact of Clinton dropping below 50%.
I wonder if the DesMoine Register poll which was conducted after the first hints of Clinton dropping below 50% was part of that.
Interesting sept shaping up with Clinton and Sanders on opposite sides of TPP, and TPP coming up for votes.

(5,400 posts)I agree, people seeing that there's a real race, and real differences in the candidates, is stirring things up.

(31,849 posts)Notice the complete lack of facebook posts of union members, and/or DUers that know of union members, complaining about the South Carolina AFL-CIO, undemocratically, not having polled them, personally, prior to issuing the endorsement?
Just saying ...

druidity33
(6,446 posts)that there's some grand conspiracy here...? I am a Union organizer and Steward, and i have had conversations with members who would rather we don't EVER endorse anyone. I actually did at my yearly Steward Seminar have several conversations with folk who were not happy with the speed of that particular HRC endorsement... they felt it was too early to endorse and not enough members were polled. If you find discontent about this Bernie endorsement on the internets i say feel free to post it with links.
As a Bernie supporter and Union guy i would also say i think it's too early to endorse anyone. Let's have at least one debate before we do that, shall we?
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)despite, a reasonable concern that it is too early for endorsements, if unions are to endorse at all.
Quite the difference among supporters, there.
Babel_17
(5,400 posts)Union leaders who acted early were probably surprised by the objections when they decided to pull the trigger in favor of HRC. She was the establishment candidate, and with a known quality of support for Unions. Well, that's water under the bridge, and Union leaders are now likely, imo, to be much more aware of Sanders surging popularity (going by the polls) with their members.
I have to think it likely that if a branch of a Union is getting behind Sanders, who is not the establishment candidate at this time, it's because he's the quintessential ally of Unions, and because he's got a lot of popularity within the local. This would go to helping explain the absence of visible protests from HRC supporters within the local. I'm sure those HRC supporters would have preferred HRC getting their Union's endorsement, but evidently they aren't concerned enough about it to publish online their disagreement.
It's even possible that they see endorsing Sanders as a win-win. If he gets nominated, great. If HRC gets nominated, she'll likely have had to come out more in support of issues that concern these Union members. Even HRC supporters might be thinking it helps to send her campaign a message.

The main group, headed by Trumka, has not endorsed. This is the state group's decision.
Even so:
On edit: Seems the SC AFL-CIO waited two months to make a final endorsement instead of taking an online poll that only a few members took part in. The teachers' group only allotted three weeks for their online poll. I'd venture to say that the SC AFL-CIO probably isn't a huge group, given the red-state nature of hating labor unions for no apparent reason (and I'm in Tennessee. I can say this). They probably had face-to-face discussions.

(11,366 posts)I merely posted this information to show that people are actively working to endorse/support/promote Sanders in states where conventional wisdom says he has no chance.
I'll leave the horse racing to Victor Espinoza.

(58,724 posts)It's just the whole "shocking Iowa" thing. I mean there haven't been any results yet.
It is really exciting to see support for Sanders building though.

(11,366 posts)I borrowed the "shocking" crap from the M$M. That's the way they presented Sanders' coming within 7 points of Clinton in the latest Iowa poll.
I'm a former reporter (worked 13 years in and have spent the past 12 in marketing/PR - all within my communications degree) and find that news reporting has become absolutely inane, vile and bowing to authority in the years since I left.
My remark was meant more to goad my own chosen profession - the reason I studied communications in college - than to emmulate the horse race.

(22,308 posts)SC is an going to be an interesting contest. NV is a caucus, so we will need to see how that works out. I believe Hillary won that in '08.
Those first 4 states tend to define a candidate. If Bernie can win 3 of them and come close in the 4th, Hillary's coronation will need to be postponed.

(5,400 posts)There's an opportunity here for those in that establishment to rise up, and speak out, in support of Sanders. If ever a politician felt they had a great speech inside, but lacked any real opportunity to frame it*, well, here's that opportunity.
Speak for all the people who's needs aren't being addressed by our current system. Speak for them, speak for yourself, speak in support of Sanders.
*That's every politician, so maybe we'll see Sanders get a surprising amount of support/nice things said about him.
