2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI'm sorry I made snarky comments about Sanders' mostly white crowds a few weeks ago.
As a Hillary supporter, I couldn't resist the temptation. Of course I knew that Sanders is a good progressive and would be every bit as effective as Hillary in addressing racism. And I never imagined that we would be seeing the kind of unhinged attacks on him where even DUers are posting that some of his supporters are white supremacists. Bizarre, shocking, and I'm sure the Republicans are loving every minute of it.

Pretty hostile crowd when they want to be. Me, too. I cannot say I am above it. I will try to have a woman's heart from here on out...heh
Thanks for posting this!

Sorry, couldn't resist. Our local healthy eatery, The Quirky Carrot, makes amazing sandwiches, awesome soups and salads, and fantastic smoothies (sipping on a cherry cocoa almond milk one right now!), but I've given up on the vegan deserts! It's like chewing on flavoured sawdust!

(14,881 posts)Fwiw, I stumbled across a picture of a Black Lives Matter protest that took place just a couple hours to my south back in April. I remember being sorry I was overbooked at work and couldn't get the time off to go. It goes a long way towards explaining Bernie's early very white crowds.

One of the few things I dislike about Boston is its city hall.

(4 posts)You can't deny that DU has looked more and more like a right-wing site the past couple of days. I haven't seen this many white people talk down to black people since I watched The Help a few years ago.

(10,007 posts)BLM is not synonymous with "black people" - it is a loose organization with no central message or leadership. Criticizing the tactics of a few loose cannons is not "talking down" to anyone.

(11,778 posts)I have stayed away from the negative posts on both Sanders and Clinton. I don't rec them, I don't participate in them. I have never considered myself a bigot, let alone a liberal white supremacist... it's been tough today to see myself grouped with people I've despised and spoke against ever since I can remember, just because I support Bernie Sanders. The worst though, is Bernie Sanders being referred to as a liberal white supremacist. A man who lost so much of his family to The Holocaust...
I still say we need more protests than less.
I will continue my support for social justice.

Everyone makes mistakes... perhaps in the post, a rewrite could save the day when called out on a mistake.
But, people here are too sensitive and too quick with the flag button, nearing the point of nausea.

(36,392 posts)The op makes a post implying, not subtly, that Sanders is a racist. Dozens of duers agree, and the meme spreads like cancer. A few weeks later some black people attack Sanders and call him and his supporters white supremacist liberals. Did someone really not see this coming?

(6,250 posts)As long as Bernie supporters realize that we are all on the same page when it comes to defeating the repubs in 2016. I am a Hillary supporter, but will vote for Bernie if he gets the nomination. I'm not so sure Bernie supporters would say the same and that is the problem I see with them. Also, why do repubs want Bernie to be the nominee? I keep asking, but no one will answer me.

(46,179 posts)will take the positive and inclusive road that Bernie's campaign and Symone Sanders laid out for us last night. "We Stand Together."
I don't take loyalty oaths, but I can assure you that I will do my best to ensure that no republican is elected in the general election.
My answer to your question:
Sanders is unique in this campaign in that his appeal crosses all kinds of boundaries. He's campaigning to fight for the 99%. That 99% includes all genders, races and ethnicities, faiths, backgrounds, political affiliations, sexual orientation...everyone that makes up the 99% in this country. He'll do well in the general election because of that; he'll pull in votes from all over that Democrats don't normally get, including the non-voters.
The biggest obstacle to overcome is the nomination; if we can achieve that, we're going to win in November 2016.

(26,549 posts)They have 40 years of opposition research on Clinton.
Clinton has an underwater "favorability" rating that keeps going down as the campaign moves on.
They have a perfect-for-30-second-ads "scandal" with her email server ("She gave away our secrets" as a manila folder marked "secret" falls into dark-skinned hands, mixed with videos of ISIS)
Thanks to 40 years of demonizing Clinton, Republican voters will crawl over broken glass to vote against Clinton. Even if the Republican nominee promises to execute all of them. No other candidate inspires such hatred.
Meanwhile, she's getting a "meh" in enthusiasm from Democrats.
That is the perfect opponent for the GOP.

(57,936 posts)When Hillary is unfairly attacked, I oppose that.
I do think she is picked on by the Republicans unfairly.
Unfortunately, I expect that Hillary will be attacked so much that it will seriously hurt her candidacy.
The Republicans will make her candidacy impossible, and she will get very few cross-overs because of the unfair and vicious attacks on her that have occurred over many years.
Whether Sanders or Clinton is the object of these unfair, lying, vicious attacks, the real losers are the voters who do not get to find out the truth, the clean truth about the candidates because of the distractions including lies and unfair accusations.
We all need to rally to end these unfair accusations whether we support the candidate being attacked or not. They are making democracy very difficult.

This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
