2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIf Jim Webb wins the Democratic presidential nomination, what would you do?
Former Virginia Senator Jim Webb announced his presidential bid in the middle of the Fourth of July holiday, when not so many people were paying attention. Webb, 69, is a moderate Democrat, but in recent days have sounded like a Conservative Democrat. Webb has written books about his days as a U.S. Marine Corps. Webb has written columns, about war, and Scots-Irish history.
Webb beat George Allen in 2006 after Allen's racist crap was revealed to the world. Webb won, barely. Webb was briefly considered to be Barack Obama's vice presidential running mate in 2008, but he declined.
Webb decided to retire from the Senate in 2012, and it seemed that his political career was over.
I disagree with Webb's positions on some issues, such as the Confederate flag issue, but I do respect his service in the Vietnam War. I was not born during that time, but I know from history, I would have opposed it.
I am undecided with who to vote for in the Democratic presidential nomination of 2016; although it is very likely that HRC will be the Democratic nominee in 2016.
However, if Jim Webb somehow won Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, won Southern primaries and won the Democratic presidential nomination, what would you do in the fall elections?

(1,209 posts)he, also O'Malley and Chafee, all in provide anti-Democratic bias confirmation and political attack material for the Republicans. None of these candidates have any voters or constituency.
They are all running on the talking points conservatives/Republicans attack Demcratic for.
Guns, taxes, southern tradition for flag. O'Malley stirred the pot with the all lives matter, the entirely unnecessary comment, unless you want to whip up some anti-Democratic voting amoung the African American community and create a group for even that and call it Black lives matter to stalk Democratic since their beginning.
So are we going to swallow all the propaganda or notice how we are going to be deceived ever more thoroughly for this election than any so far.

(31,999 posts)We can agree to disagree on him. He's not a Johnny Come Lately Democratic Party member and is running towards his record of impementation of progressive policy. He taxed the rain - and if that pisses off populists and conservatives alike - that's a good thing.
Wait until the debates. I've also posted in the O'Malley group about other black supporters of O'Malley. It was a high school friend that moved from Western NY to Baltimore about 15 years ago who tipped me off on him. If Sanders, Clinton, Webb and Chafee campaigns are going to try to paint him as anti black - that would be stupid.
We aren't dumb and we aren't blind. It's not that the others are anti black - its just that from my point of view - they can't appeal to those blacks who are working poor to those who are wealthy across the board. Voting Rights, pathways to prosperity that don't include a college education for those who didn't receive the best from grade school on, access to decent housing when you have that high paying skilled labor job, equal treatment by the medical community and safe neighborhoods - he's the only one we can see "rubbed shoulders and walked among the people".

His mother STILL works for Senator Mikulski and he worked on her first election. I have a feeling Ms. Mikulski would deeply disagree with the idea that he's 'Anti-Dem'
People can disagree on his policies but I really have to wonder sometimes where I am posting.
YOu know even before the BLM incident at NRN, he said this (MAy 3, 2015) http://thehill.com/homenews/sunday-talk-shows/240890-omalley-blacks-are-not-disposable-citizens
I just feel the need to put this here as I believe it might get a better reception (and I'm gonna leave it at that) It's not directed at you JAG.

That would be a tough one. It would be less painful, simply because of proximity to the environment, if I lived in VA. He's fairly progressive for some areas of that state....

Unless by some miracle a progressive third-party candidate had a chance or the Republican nominee suddenly embraced Democratic principles.
It's important to, if necessary, fight fiercely for the best of a bad lot. Example:
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/02/21/vote-for-the-crook-it-s-important-edwin-edwards-wants-back-in-congress.html
I hope it is not necessary - i.e., I'd like to fight for an actual positive choice.

(31,999 posts)Vote for him of course!
But - he can't win NY, NJ, MD, MA, CA - not in the primary.
Of course if the primaries started in NY, CA, FL, TX, and MA - the Democratic nominee would always be more reflective of larger America.

(9,133 posts)If Jim Webb won the Democratic nomination, I'd still vote for him. Being a patriot and devoutly wishing to restore the political health of the American republic, I have come to the conclusion that ANY of the major Democratic contenders are preferable to the liars, the scamsters, the bully oys, the thugs, the unethical, and the psychotics crowding each other for the Republican Party's presidential nomination.
Neither the Republic nor the American people can afford another Republican Presidency.

(12,655 posts)if the candidate represents corporate centrist ideals gets nominated, you should vote for them anyway because they have a D after their name. Go to the polls, shut up and vote for the Democrat.
in other words, it's another version of "you should vote for Hillary because she's a Democrat." and how dare you even think of voting for anyone else.
sorry to the OP if they really were contemplating the merits of Jim Webb's candidacy, but I'm just not feeling it. This has the smack of a Hillary loyalty oath all over it.
