The secret of Getting Out The Vote...
I never realized this until I was involved in a GOTV effort a few years ago. I had always thought that getting out the vote meant calling people the day and night before the election and then hoping for the best. BUT, there is a final step that is critical and I saw it work with my own eyes.
I was involved with a group that worked to oust Repub Congressman Charlie Bass here in NH. I was asked poll watch in my small town on election day. I sat at a desk next to where people came to sign in to vote. They would say their name and the election official would repeat it. I had a list of all the likely Dem voters wer had identified and as names were read I would cross them off my list. After about 2 hours of this, a "runner" would show up, take my list with the names of people who had not yet voted, and head back to the phone bank where calls were then made to those people. I was given a clean list and continued the process. To my amazement, within 45 minutes or so after the runner had left, I would see people coming in to vote who were on my list. This happened repeatedly during election day. It was hard work but it paid off. Bass was booted.
