Lewis Black backs Bernie Sanders — and says Donald Trump’s candidacy is ‘already a punchline’

June 23, 2015

While his long-standing alienation from presidential politics continues, comedian Lewis Black said, things have gotten to the point where he doesn’t have to “write funny” about the latest batch of conservative candidates.

“They’re going give me the stuff. They’re gonna hand it to me,” Black told the Daily Beast. “‘Donald Trump is running for president.’ That’s already a punchline. That’s the joke! The joke’s done!”

At the same time, the self-identified Socialist said he could get behind Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, even though it was “a little upsetting” to him that Sanders, an independent, is campaigning for the Democratic Party nomination.

“I wish he’d just say, ‘F*ck em,'” Black said of Sanders. “But that’s the way of the world.”

Black also scoffed at what he called a fear of Socialism engulfing US politics, calling the idea “a form of dementia.”

“We have no party,” he said. “There’s like seven of us.” I’ve got no meetings to go to. So I’m excited. I’m mostly excited that [Sanders is] just stating stuff that needs to be reiterated that the [Democrats], basically, don’t reiterate. And it’s in terms of financial inequality.”

I really like both Black and Sanders but I've gotta say I think Black is really missing the mark. tech3149 Jun 2015 #1

The pragmatic genius of Sanders is running as a Democrat. There is no was in our political landscape that a third party candidate has a chance in hell of getting to the general election. The only sane thing to do is run within the political structure that exists.
You can bet your ass that most of the party "leadership" will do everything in their power to kneecap Sanders but I'm pretty sure he knew that getting into the campaign.
What he is hoping for and counting on is that people like you and me will stand behind not just him but the policies he promotes. If we can do that and make it not just about an election but a movement that supports the interest of the people, we might just have a chance.

I think it's great that a nice guy who is also honest and funny as hell as Black says
he supports Sanders...it is an opinion that helps yet he likely is already singing
to a choir of Bernie fans anyway..and celebrity status does not get you too much
in politics.

With that said, I bet he donates heavily..so there's that.
