Top Dems pushing Montco’s Josh Shapiro to run against Joe Sestak for Senate nod

HARRISBURG, Pa. >> Top Democrats are pressuring Josh Shapiro, a former state lawmaker who heads Pennsylvania’s third most populous county in Montgomery County, to run for the U.S. Senate, a reflection of the party’s unease with second-time candidate, Delco’s Joe Sestak.

Two people familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press this week that Democratic Senate leaders, including New York’s Chuck Schumer and the head of the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm, Montana’s Jon Tester, have spoken with Shapiro.

The two people, an official in Washington and a party official in Pennsylvania, spoke on condition of anonymity because they did not want to be named divulging the private conversations.

Shapiro, 41, a onetime chief of staff for former U.S. Rep. Joe Hoeffel, served six years in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives before becoming a Montgomery County commissioner. He chairs the three-member panel in the affluent suburban Philadelphia county and has emerged as a close ally of new Gov. Tom Wolf.
