Related: About this forumJeffress: A Mormon is better than Obama
The AP reports that Robert Jeffress, the Texas evangelical leader who has described Mormonism as "a cult," is now endorsing presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney.
The pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas, the Rev. Robert Jeffress, tells The Associated Press that he still doesn't believe Mormons are Christians.
But Jeffress says voters will have to choose between a Christian like President Barack Obama and a Mormon like Romney. He says the difference is that Obama embraces non-biblical principles while Romney embraces biblical principles like the sanctity of life and the sanctity of marriage.
Given that choice, Jeffress says he believes Christians should support Romney in November "in spite of his Mormon faith."
The Jeffress endorsement comes on the heels of a poll released Tuesday that reported Virginia evangelical Christians would vote for Romney over Barack Obama by a nearly 2-1 margin. They weren't enthusiastic about the former Massachusetts governor, but the Roanoke College Poll found 83 percent said his religion made no difference in their vote and just 13 percent said it would make them less likely to vote for him.
Taken together, the two raise a question that doesn't get asked much: what if Romney's faith hardly matters at all? While it's naive to think it won't have any effect, it's not like there is a wide body of evidence that proves significant bias against Mormon candidates. And it's becoming clear through polling -- and from the statements of evangelicals like Jeffress -- that resistance to Obama on the right is so strong that it's probably enough to overcome any marginal reservations about Romney's LDS faith.

In one of the most bizarre twists of reality we will ever see in our lives, the "liberal media" spun a decorated man who served and saw REAL action in Vietnam as a weak, unamerican flip flopper, and the clown whose family name allowed him to not see action in Vietnam as a resolute and tough Texan.
If it was a Democrat who was running as a Morman, absolutely, no ifs ands or butts, the most bizarre aspects of the faith would be put out 24/7, and it would destroy that person's candidacy.
It won't matter a bit for Romney.
I think people here have been lulled by the media being allowed out of its box for the last year because of the primary, and romney being detestable to the base and the powers to be within the party not being able to control the media. The primary is now over, and the whole Hillary Rossen thing was clearly the powers to be putting the screws to the media and forcing them back into doing their bidding.
The rules have now normalized: 1) ALWAYS negatively frame the democrat 2) ALWAYS protect the republican.
This stuff about Mormonism won't matter any more than Bush's drug use, his philandering or his service dodging. They just won't drive it.

(12,272 posts)But I doubt it, I hope I am wrong though. Putting out that Obama would go after Rmoney because of his religion was the first big deterrent to exposing Mormonism for what it really is. The religion has a whole lot to hide and they are experts at hiding it. I sure hope you are right.

(34,857 posts)Unfortunately, as McCain found out in 2008, they need to be really energized to deliver Republicans the White House. That's one thing Bush was good at, mobilizing the most important voting bloc of the Republican Party. Romney will get a bulk of evangelicals who vote, but there will be enough who will either vote Obama, or not vote at all, to really hurt him, just as it hurt McCain four years ago.
That's the problem Romney faces. It's why I really have a hard time believing he'll win this election. I get that I'm an Obama supporter and that my opinion is skewed a bit, but in reality, Romney doesn't have a true, solid, enthusiastic group of supporters who'll help him in the general. He's doing poorly among Hispanic voters. he's doing poorly among women voters. He's doing poorly among independents. So, even if he gets 10% less support among evangelicals than Bush did in '00 & '04, it will not only lock him into defeat, it will probably lock him into a landslide defeat.
