I didn't think I'd be saying this two or four years ago, but I don't think the modern Republican Party is redeemable. The signs that it is in retreat come every day, but yesterday was a particularly bad day for them.
Sen. Jefferson Sessions of Alabama spent hours on the floor yesterday, railing against the confirmation of Jack Lew as Treasury Secretary, but in the end he could only get 24 Republican colleagues to join with him. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina was humiliated by a Milwaukee police chief during a hearing on gun violence held by the Judiciary Committee. The previously feared and revered journalist Bob Woodward was busy trashing his own reputation as he transformed himself into a Donald Trump caricature. Sean Hannity had his ass handed to him by a black Muslim congressman from Minneapolis. Justice Antonin Scalia made one of the most racist and inappropriate comments from the bench of the Supreme Court that we've seen in modern history. Meanwhile, the whole world is aligned in stupefaction that the GOP would rather trash the economy than make modest compromises with the president on the budget.
There is no party left for the center-right. I think that that one will be created.

They sure as hell aren't lefties as a party. True lefties would be against the stupid war on drugs, which enslaves the poor and underclass and is incredibly expensive and insane), would work to abolish the federal death penalty and the death penalty in all the states, would fight for older people and children by cutting the obscene and wasteful "defense" (more like "offense"
spending and protect Medicare and Medicaid, would promote the attributes and agenda of the ACLU, including free speech, free press, freedom to petition the government for redress, etc., would pass a law to prevent blatant discrimination against homosexuals, which is currently legal under federal law (except under Pres. Clinton's executive order for federal employment situations), would work to correct the invidious remnants of discrimination in this country in the corporate culture, where blacks make up less than 2% of the managers in Fortune 500 companies (there are only 6 black CEOs in that group, and women are scarcely better represented than that), would punish companies for shipping jobs overseas, not rewarding them, would pass sensible gun control and laugh at the insipid NRA, would refuse to give one dime more for "corporate welfare," would aggressively regulate the predatory banks and insurance companies, and would tell the GOP to kiss their collective asses and tell them to get lost if they continue to be obstructionist assholes. Now THAT's a party I could get behind!!
It looks like this idiotic sequester is actually going to happen.
