(5,648 posts)Whether you like it or not Collen Powell is one of the most respected people in this country and his is a huge enforcement for Hillary. You and your past grievances need to spend some time alone together.
RelativelyJones
(898 posts)And he took that clout and flashed around the white powder nonsense at the UN with devastating consequences. But yeah, bygones.
CajunBlazer
(5,648 posts)Along with Hilary he was a victim of W's and Cheney's duplicity.
Powell is a respected former Secretary of State, knows the job Hillary did as SoS, and knows how hard that job is. So his is an important endorsement. It doesn't hurt at all that he is a Republican and is bashing Trump.
Again, You and your past grievances need to spend some quality time alone together because the majority of the people in this country do not hold Powell responsible for the Iraq war. So in the in the final analysis, your perceptions are not really germane to this discussion.

(898 posts)There are many here who also feel Powell is an opportunist and enabler and not at all a victim. And this "bold" move is classic Powell...wait to the last minute when everything looks good and jump on the bandwagon so he can come across as this great man of principle.

(5,648 posts)We are so few in number it matters not, though many here apparently admire him as evidenced by most of the replies to the OP. What is important about his endorsement is that he is popular and admired across party lines, those less so with Republicans since he threw his support to Obama. I have heard serious talk about Powell as a presidential candidate though he doesn't seem the least bit interested
You need understand that the world does not revolve about your opinions, regardless of what they may be.
RelativelyJones
(898 posts)But there was presidential talk around Powell up until his role in the run up to the war. Not after, and for obvious reasons. I suggest you do your research before lecturing others.
True that no one cares about my or your opinion beyond DU, but we are each allowed to express them. I have no idea why you felt the need to reprimand me simply because you have a different opinion of the man. I also have serious doubts about how many are swayed by his last minute endorsement. You feel differently, fair enough.
CajunBlazer
(5,648 posts).. and you took it on yourself to throw cold water on their excitement because you have a beef the endorser. I cannot think of a person who might endorse Hillary that someone on DU wouldn't have a problem with.
Either an endorsement will be generally be seen by potential voters positively or not. For instance an endorsement by a KKK grand wizard would not be seen positively (though I don't see that happening). On the other hand, there can be little doubt that Powell's endorsement will be generally be seen as a positive by the voting public.
My point is that it isn't productive for an individual to imply that a positive endorsements is not useful because he/she has a personal beef with the endorser.
And yes, you are perfectly free to continue to comment on any OP as you see fit. Just remember that I (and anyone else for that matter) is also perfectly free to designate your comments as unproductive if we see fit.
RelativelyJones
(898 posts)What you describe as merely a "personal beef" is in fact Powell's active promotion of a catastrophic war. When the world and country was on edge he got in front of the UN and lent all his credibility to the WMD lie. This had an enormous impact on public sentiment.
I am not alone in this opinion, just look at the other comments. Many commenters here feel the same and we have as much right to express our views on Powell as you do.

Meanwhile, consider your reply to the OP so designated.
RelativelyJones
(898 posts)Perhaps one day you will realize this if you can get past your smugness. Consider your replies equally designated.

(27,787 posts)Powell was screwed by Bush and Cheney ... I suspect Powell would be terrified of a Trump Presidency where Trump thinks he can imprison anyone he wants, threaten the media, and ignore the UN and NATO while giving Nukes to anyone who wants them.
