Related: About this forumThe Pros And Cons Of Military Intervention Against ISIS
In a televised address to the American public Wednesday, President Obama laid out plans for using military force to destroy the ISIS terrorist network. Here are the arguments for and against U.S. intervention in Iraq and Syria:
The Case For Intervention
Keeps the rust off the ol war machine
Helps bring stability to Assad regime
Obama says ISIS is like a cancer, and we all know cancer is bad
Great chance to win those last few Iraqi hearts and minds we didnt quite get to during last campaign
Beacon of freedom, moral high ground, all that shit
Its already happening, so just go with it
The Case Against Intervention
Could set negative precedent of engaging in armed conflict without official congressional approval
Recklessly marches nation into war before trade and tourism sanctions can have any effect
Just going to have to do it all over again in six years, 13 years, 17 years, and 21 years anyway
Means U.S. government is publicly flip-flopping on whether Syrian civilians lives have any value
Pretty much guaranteed to cut off diplomatic relations with eventual Islamic State of Iraq
Not going to work

(16,423 posts)How would you call people whose solutions to solving a conflict are:
* ignoring the conflict
* lamenting how the conflict shouldn't have been caused in the first place
How would you call people who demand that we unilaterally refrain from violence, consequences be damned?

(670 posts)I am giving you a chance to make your proposals!
1. Bomb the shit out of ISIS.
2. Arm the Kurds.
3. Cooperate with Russia and Iran on Iraq, but not on Syria.
4. Start talks with Saudi-Arabia, Qatar and all those other middle-eastern countries that support Imams who call for jihad and try to get them to do something about those Imams.
5. Start research in Iraq whether it would be possible to turn Iraq into a federal nation to reduce the ethnic tensions. If it sounds feasible, make that proposal to Iraq.
6. Focus on stabilizing Iraq and let Russia do the heavy lifting in Syria.
