2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI think there is something seriously brewing in the GOP to get rid of Trump.

I listen to RW talk shows on my long commute and it does sound like an anti-Trump mutiny is building. Also watched Morning Joe this morning and I have never seen Joe so angry about how bad Trump is and that the GOP needs to do something about it. That was about the same thing I heard on RW radio too. And the comments from Ryan and McConnell.. its getting ugly for Trump.
Not sure exactly but it sounds like a rules change at the convention which will block Trump from getting the nomination on the first ballot, requiring a super majority, which will then allow delegates to vote however they want on the second ballot.
This is going to be interesting.

(36 posts)Ryan was mad but he says he still supports Trump.
Several repug politicians have publicly said they no longer support Trump for his recent racist comments.

(59,503 posts)He has a huge ego and he HAS the nomination in hand. What could be good enough to trade for it?
It is hard for anyone who has been in a race to emotionally concede it wil not happen. Look at Howard Dean speaking of himself as similar to Bernie and how it took Al Gore telling him to drop out. In reality, he dropped out when he was out of money, had won no states and had around 150 delegates. He later won VT. Yet he spoke of not wanting to quit.
In Trump's case he is the de facto nominee. I do not know if they are stuck with him even if there was a Trump University indictment.

(8,616 posts)I really think that Trump is in on the whole game. A willing participant. He's gotten so much publicity and air time over this.

(54,770 posts)GOPers are traditionally racist and hateful, but this is different. Trump doesn't even appear to be serious, he's just running his mouth and laughing at all the yahoos who are supporting his crud.

(24,689 posts)It's going to be ugly for them no matter what but I think they are thinking better to take a hit now with dumping Trump than risk alienating minorities and women for years perhaps decades if they support Trump.

(4,665 posts)Whether they ditch Trump or not they own him; he's been their nominee for sufficient enough time for the Democrats to "bloody shirt" most other Republican candidates with guilt by association. Even the replacement candidate will not be able to avoid this. You are right in suggesting that is supporters will not take this particularly well.
On the 50th anniversary of the Southern Strategy they deserve nothing less.

(2,542 posts)all of the recommendations that came out of that, and their response was to make Donald Trump their nominee despite everything on the record about him.
The GOP still thinks white conservative male hegemony is coming back and just right around the corner. This is pretty much exactly what they deserve for continually pushing off and delaying their inevitable confrontation with the racist fringe.

(24,689 posts)Trump was created from populist RW anger and frustration with what they saw as Obama beating the GOP on every issue even though they had the majority in both chambers. The GOP wanted Jeb from the beginning.. they still do.

(48,181 posts)I doubt it. They will fall in line, accept that trump will likely lose, focus on keeping the house and senate and other down ticket races and rejigger the primary process for 2020.

(15,429 posts)Trump has enough delegates who must be committed to him under the rules on the first ballot to take it all on the first ballot.
So the only way for the GOP to dump Trump is to change the rules after the game has been played.
On top of that, they have to do it with a majority of votes from the delegates, including every last Trump delegate.
Only Trump can dump Trump now. The only way for them to be rid of him is for him to withdraw before the nomination is made official.
That ain't happening.

It's beautiful.

(1,089 posts)I want to be sure this POS makes it out of the convention and into the general. If they replace him at the convention with someone who poops indoors, it could make things difficult for HRC. If they let him out of the convention and he continues throwing up all over himself, it could lead to big things for us in the GE up and down tickets all over the place.
I don't want him pushed aside too soon. Perhaps about a week before the election... that'd be perfect.

(5,737 posts)Hilary will cause than explosion during a debate. He may even walk off the stage. the GOP will be up shit creek without a paddle because Trump will still be in the ballot, They won't be able to replace him.

(12,504 posts)....I don't know what they could do to stop it without damaging their brand. Their best hope is to let Trump run, help Hillary win and hope 4 years from now, they have a candidate or two that can be exciting enough to render Trump a faint memory, while rewriting the history of his greatness.

(36,926 posts)So I don't know how they could pull this off. I do know they hate and want to get rid of him though, so maybe...

(31,011 posts)For the most part. He won't be able to resist spouting his racist Trumpisms.
This running for president stuff is hard and he's pretty undisciplined. At this point, I think the only way out he has is by losing. I also think he wants to leap off this train and get back to his pathetic life. He's got to ride it all the way off the cliff and take the repub party with him. Good times are ahead.
