2016 Postmortem

http://news.yahoo.com/why-hurricane-sandy-might-cost-obama-the-popular-vote-but-not-the-presidency-1030125687.htmlhis statement premised on the state of things on the East Coast following this storm. Anyone else been thinking that something like this is actually quite likely? As much as I was appalled by the atrocity of the storm, I couldn't help myself from thinking the same thing. What are the odds that polling places will be up and running next Tuesday, never mind the fact that these folks are going to be in a state of shock for some time to come.
I can't help but worry about this and is it even in the realm of possibility that millions of votes lost in the metropolitan citites of the Northeast could actually even cost Obama the whole thing?

(12,504 posts)so if anyone is going to be more negatively impacted, it'll be the Reps.
The voting ballots have been secured and saved. They didn't put them in boxes in the basements, for crying out loud!
Obama will be winning both the popularity AND the electoral votes this November.

(15,185 posts)but since most, if not all of the states affected were strongly blue it's unlikely to have an impact on the electoral vote.
But Obama's popular vote could be impacted since the region is a stronghold for him. It's hard to say how down ticket races will be affected. Who knows if this has any effect on the CT Senate race. Maybe someone more familiar with statewide races in the region can provide more insight.
Either way, it's incredibly devastating and I can see why Christie basically said "fuck the politics". This will quite some time to clean up. The photos on the Atlantic are really something.

(25,415 posts)DE and MD have some power outage issues too. They are going to use paper ballots in these states and switch locations for polling places if need be. Even in these blue states turnout is usually high.
But we are not babies on the east coast. We are used to crappy weather. Power outages are not uncommon here with even snow storms. I lost power during the freak October snow storm in Connecticut last year.
Bad weather really does not stop us from doing much. Drive through snow? We do it all the time to work and school. Rain is nothing to most of us. Power outages and some loss of mass transit will be a pain in the ass but not really deter most people here that want to vote.
