(10,500 posts)traditionally defined that term.
But I also don't think it is fair to say that we have to wait until the convention, also based on how we have traditionally defined that term.
Of course, some traditions are only eight years old in this regards, but it does seem like a precedent was set in 2008.
Here is the 2008 standard, as I see it: when a candidate gets a majority of pledged delegates, and when their total PDs and super delegate commitments represent a majority of all delegates, that person is declared the presumptive nominee.
I expect Hillary to achieve that benchmark on June 7.
But the voting will continue until June 14 in Washington DC.
So maybe the one week countdown to when the board is expected to rally around the nominee will begin at that point. In which case the Hillary-bashing will have to cease on June 21.
I guess that means that we will celebrate the Summer Solstice by coming back together as a party.

The mission of the board will change after the nominating contest is over. At that point the mission of the board will be to elect the Democratic nominee to the presidency.

(68,565 posts)There was one Democrat a while back who ripped another Democratic candidate to shreds ...refused to concede to have his 'issues' explored...so he went to the convention...we lost that year...Jimmy Carter was the president...Ted Kennedy was the candidate who b went to the convention. He helped Ronald Reagan get elected. The story of our country would be different had Reagan never won. If a GOP is elected in the fall...he would likely have all branches of government...five court picks too. People would literally die as healthcare would be repealed for sure...nothing to replace it with either. LGBT would be trashed...a woman's right to choose...as for the economy...the Gop always wrecks it. Also not only would we not get a minimum wage of $15., the GOP wants no minimum wage. It could happen. For the good of the party and the country...we need to move to the general and get behind the candidate...much has been made of Hillary staying in. I was an Obama supporter. but she did have a path to the nomination...when she no longer did, she conceded and worked her tail off to elect Obama. It is my opinion that Bill Clinton saved the Democratic election in 12...he worked hard to get Obama re-elected. As I volunteer for every Democratic candidate, I saw it close up...so let's get Hillary elected or if it makes it better for you guys...think about not electing a Republican who will cause nothing but misery for all. I am hoping as Bernie thinks about it, he will bow out and not allow hurt feeling or ego to risk the general.

(24,396 posts)of Sanders campaign issues in the platform. It's pure hubris on the part of Sanders and his followers to believe that losers get to dicate terms to the victors. Besides, Ds are voting overwhelmingly for Hillary and her take on the issues. Why in heaven's name would she risk pissing off her overwhelming support by adopting stances she didn't campaign on herself?

(24,396 posts)And for the Democratic Party which supported her overwhelmingly.
Your point?
Sanders is being stupid. Were he smart, he'd be talking to her right now, discussing how he can best support her and the Ds and devising an exit strategy that works for him. But it's not about the D Party, it's all about Sanders.
pat_k
(9,313 posts)stopbush
(24,396 posts)If Sanders gave a fuck about the D Party, he would suspend his campaign tonight, throw his support fully behind Hillary and present a united front that would contrast with the chaos on the R side of the ledger. He could then negotiate quietly behind the scenes for his issues.
By continuing to engage in his lost cause in a very public manner, he throws that all away and hands the media their false equivalancy mantra that the Ds are just as screwed up as the Rs. Nice work, Bernie, you fucking asshole. Squander a golden opportunity to show the world that Ds are of one mind in this election. And why? Because of your useless ego and self-centered bullshit.
pat_k
(9,313 posts)Pretty simple.
It's not about Bernie. It's never been about Bernie. It's about trying to put some spine into the spineless Dems who have their heads stuck up in the beltway sphincter.
Bernie tapped into the frustration and anguish that exists "out here." You can't just wish the genie back into the bottle.

Sanders Statement on Primary Elections
APRIL 26, 2016
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday issued the following statement:
I congratulate Secretary Clinton on her victories tonight, and I look forward to issue-oriented campaigns in the 14 contests to come.
I am proud that we were able to win a resounding victory tonight in Rhode Island, the one state with an open primary where independents had a say in the outcome. Democrats should recognize that the ticket with the best chance of winning this November must attract support from independents as well as Democrats. I am proud of my campaigns record in that regard.
The people in every state in this country should have the right to determine who they want as president and what the agenda of the Democratic Party should be. Thats why we are in this race until the last vote is cast. That is why this campaign is going to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia with as many delegates as possible to fight for a progressive party platform that calls for a $15 an hour minimum wage, an end to our disastrous trade policies, a Medicare-for-all health care system, breaking up Wall Street financial institutions, ending fracking in our country, making public colleges and universities tuition free and passing a carbon tax so we can effectively address the planetary crisis of climate change.

New rule for posts on jpr
David Brock (noted "former" Conservative and enabler of Clarence Thomas' sexual harassment) has announced that he's spending a million bucks on Internet trolls to combat disloyalty towards Hillary Clinton. To combat this crap, we have a new rule: henceforth, any speculation about Bernie possibly not winning the Democratic nomination must be phrased as follows: "If Hillary and her DNC steals the election, and if Hillary is not indicted for the obvious criminally jeopardizing of national security by using a personal mail server as SOS to evade FOIA, then..."
This not only captures the truth, it's something that a Brock-troll won't write, of course.
Failure to use this phrasing or something very close when speculating that Bernie might not win the nomination will result in a deleted post. The second time it happens, the poster will be banned.
This rule is agreed to by all mods and admins

(2,522 posts)that listening to Sanders statement, he is saying that there is NO path for him to win. She said that a lot of people will be upset with her saying this.
Even she can see the truth. Everyone who is really watching and listening is saying the same thing. It's over. Sanders only wants to continue to push his progressive agenda all the way to the convention. He is not in it to win any longer.
Time to call it. Sanders himself has said there is no path to victory for him.
Skinner..the ball is in your court.
pat_k
(9,313 posts)We are going to keep working to send as many Sanders delegates to Philadelphia as possible.
With each vote for Sanders, we call on the Democratic Party to commit to making the New, New Deal a reality.
And when about 45% of the pledged delegates on the convention floor are Bernie delegates, I think the Democratic leadership will have a much harder time "dis-ing" them the way Hillary is now.
revmclaren
(2,522 posts)But it will be the top topic tomorrow and very hard to ignore. But hugs on your loss...

(9,313 posts)If Hillary keeps up her "fuck em" tone, there will be a whole lotta booing goin' on.
revmclaren
(2,522 posts)pat_k
(9,313 posts)But if Hillary and the so-called "leadership" says "fuck you" to Bernie delegates (as she currently is to Bernie's supporters), it will get ugly.
They are going to have to deal with it somehow. I think we'll be seeing Democratic insiders take a more conciliatory tone to the progressive wing of the Democratic party come July -- perhaps she'll even take a bold stand on something.
revmclaren
(2,522 posts)And he will go back to Vermont without anything from the administration and someone will challenge his senate seat using sanders own attacks against the now president Clinton and the convention footage to attack him and that will be the end of a great career.
So good luck with that. hope it works out exactly as you wish.
pat_k
(9,313 posts)Me, I'm just looking forward to seeing it play out.
you are arguing with someone who only seems to care to be able to win. You are trying to talk about not winning but making the DNC better. And it is useless to try and talk that with someone that only see their own personal glory because of Clinton winning. They have never cared about the issues but about that candidate whose name is Clinton. If she came out tomorrow and said She was changing her stance on Gun control and Abortion most of them would say oh yea gun control is stupid we need to stop trying to push it.

(3,111 posts)until the convention. There are still plenty of votes necessary to go over the threshold. And there is nothing wrong with continuing the race.
The very word "pivot" is fraught with disaster. I sincerely hope that Hillary does not pivot from her current primary policies and positions to some rightward leaning position, in the hopes of attracting a few stray Republican votes. That would be a disaster!!!
You and Hillary and other Hillary supporters should get yourselves ready for a unifying convention, where hopefully Hillary's platform, positions, and VP selection have something to say to all the very energized Bernie supporters who are Democrats, Independents, and Republicans. That would be the smart move, not pissing them off further or further disenfranchising them.
Can't you see the wisdom of that?
Asking to call this off somehow on DU makes no sense at all. But reaching out and finding common ground, that does make sense.

highprincipleswork
(3,111 posts)if she is successful and utilizes the framework that she and Bernie have both built, she will have plenty of headsup on the general election, especially compared to the Republicans.
There is a lot of fence-mending and bridge-building and reassurances involved if she really wants to lead this whole army and not just half of one. That's where the building should be, up until the convention.
I consider her speech tonight a good start. A lot of my fellow Bernie supporters are not ready, however, to be so generous. I would like to see more.

No, there are massive steel cables to be unwound, giant barges of cement and rebar to be gently ferried through groaning steel sea locks. Foundations to be lain, caverns to be blasted. Huge earthen mounds to be unearthed, and re-earthed again.
The undertaking of the pivotude must be begun and begun NOW, or verily we are doomed in the face of the ginormous pivoting task which lieth before us!
