Sanders Dissed At Roundtable Event
Politico hosted a POLITICO Caucus roundtable event, where a panel of Democratic party agents, insiders, operatives and strategists were sat down and asked about the state of the election. What Politico showed was a divided panel, with a very high level of distortion coming from the Hillary supporters on it. The panel was sharply divided, with one half believing that Sanders should drop out of the race, the sooner the better. The other half felt he needed to stay in until the end.
The actual answers the pro-Hillary half gave however indicates a deeper problem among her supporters, who seem unable to grasp the reality that their candidate is not actually in as strong a position as theyd want going into the convention.
One caucus member from Wisconsin:
He stands no chance of winning the nomination at this point, and the Democrats can show a united front while the Republicans are so deeply fractured.
Another from Florida:
The primary is over. There is no path, and there is no math.
One from New Hampshire:
If any adults actually supported Bernie, they would tell him to get out next Wednesday morning.
Most telling on this logical disconnect was this one from another Wisconsin democrat:
He should also do what Hillary did in 08.
In 2008, Hillary Clinton refused to bow out until the primaries were over. In fact, she did not formally concede the race until almost a week had passed. Sanders has already indicated that should he not triumph in his campaign for pledged delegates by the end of the primary season, he will support Clinton. For her supporters, people who are well-connected into the DNC, to call for him to drop out now, instead of later, is suspicious. And when we look at the 2008 primary, the reason why is clear. For the last two months of primaries, Clinton won 58 percent of the pledged delegates. At this time, Sanders only needs to win this same 58 percent of the remaining delegates, matching this ratio. If this same ratio holds true, Sanders would win the primary season by the barest handful of delegates, and that is what Clinton is now afraid of.
The fear at this point is not in Sanders splitting the Democrats, but in Sanders beating Clinton. While some will claim that there is no math to support him, in reality the math does still support Sanders. This is a point of denial for the supporters of Clinton, and demonstrates a bubble of distortion in place around the campaign.

(50,130 posts)It's so simple!
No drama. No impeachment. No allegiance to special interests. No wars of choice. No corruption.
Just good, calm governance.
Which is why the MSM is ignoring him. He will be dull. Nothing for them to beat up or fixate on.

(46,436 posts)It's the potential for unending drama that has me feeling particularly skeptical about a Clinton presidency.
Rightly or wrongly, the Republicans will be investigating her unendingly. I just don't see that happening with a Sanders presidency. I'm not saying that they won't oppose him vigorously, but I think they will have trouble finding personal scandals to pursue.

I have news for the delegates who think they're on her side: if you didn't give 104%, if you didn't go out of your way to slam, smear, and steal--you're her enemy, too
should she win, that's a few thousand princes of the party that almost lost the nom for her, and now she has full power and authority within the party and an absolute lock on every lever of power for four years

(3,111 posts)and those like-minded Independents and Republicans who are attracted to his message into the Democratic Party, instead of messing with our own "right to choose", they would be a lot better off.
Or yes, they could of course just back Bernie, the person with the best likelihood of winning a general election in my opinion and in the opinion of poll after poll for months now.
But, failing this, at least figure out how to include all the many who support him, instead of dissing with them, messing with their heads, etc. How about reassuring them that Hillary actually is as Progressive as her supporters keep saying she is?

(24,010 posts)...and we go into a contested convention, with Sanders showing national poll numbers of very high favorability and trustworthiness, while Clinton's favorability and trustworthy numbers are in the toilet; and with Sanders furthermore 10 pts up on Trump, while Clinton only ties him (or beats him by just a few pts--I can't recall which). Earlier national matchups had Sanders beating all Republicans and Clinton losing to a couple of them.
Another factor at the convention may be Clinton's dirty campaign. Long list of dirty, most of it Brock; also NY and AZ, if a whistleblower comes forth--but even without direct evidence, it looks dirty, and where else has it been dirty? Some of her supporters may be sick of her by then, and also worried about the FBI investigation and losing confidence that she could win the GE. Trump (or any Republican) will surely rub her face in all of her corruption. Just how far are establishment Democrats willing to go in defense of some of her most dubious actions (her private email server, her lies about her private email server, the Wall Street speeches, Libya, Honduras, the Clinton Foundation pay-to-play with SOB's like the Saudis)? Hard to say. They haven't balked at any of it yet, which doesn't say much for them. But that could change in a contested convention.
Actually, I think this is a quite possible outcome of the primaries. "The math" favors Clinton to reach the magic number but it is not certain at all that she will. Sanders can still reach it. And Sanders can prevent her from reaching it.
I agree with your assessment of the Clinton supporters at this meeting. They are aware that Sanders can still win it, or at the least prevent her from winning. And THAT is why they want Sanders to drop out.
They may also perceive how bad Sanders makes Clinton look. She really is a terrible candidate, and every day that he's running against her, her corruption and hypocrisy are all the more emphasized by comparison to him. This is, of course, not his fault. It's her fault. And it certainly is no reason for him to drop out--to make a bad candidate look better!
Demsrule86
(68,565 posts)There is no magic number. She is ahead...supers will put her over the top in a near unanimous first ballot vote...just as they did with Obama...so no contested convention...that is the Republican way. In our primaries...Democrats choose the nominee by pledged delegates. I am hoping that Bernie loses so badly that he gets out now. At this point, he is losing whatever integrity he had and hurting the general.

(9,385 posts)They are presuming how many delegates in each race will go to whom. Oh, really? They are fortune tellers now? How analytical and coldly objective of them! (not)
But the biggest point is, they have no say in the matter. It's up to Sanders, and his supporters. Period.
He doesn't have big donors who can pull the plug, and he hasn't had much media coverage throughout his campaign, so the media can't pull the plug on him either. Imagine how much he would be crushing Hillary if he had the equivalent of Trump's free "news" coverage all year.
And yes, I totally agree with the OP that the reason for "drop out mania" is they are worried he will win... and they're right to be worried, he probably will! Time is on Bernie's side, the more people hear about him the more his support grows.
In any challenge I believe it's always good to do the opposite of what an opponent wants, and that's exactly what he's doing. Good for him! Go Bernie!
AND I WILL BE VOTING FOR HIM TODAY IN MD!!! It's by far the best vote of my lifetime, and I'm 66. There's no way I want my friends on the other coast to miss the chance to do the same!
This is dedicated to the Clintonites, who are newly so afraid of time -- I would be too in their shoes, but I won't bring up that bad 3-letter "F" word...
Time Is (It's A Beautiful Day, 1969)
"Time is too slow for those who wait
And time is too swift for those who fear
Time is too long for those who grieve
And time is too short for those that laugh
...
But for those who love,
But for those who really love,
But for those who love,
Time, sweet time, precious time,
Lovely time, all the time,
Time, time, time, time, time, time
Time, time, time, time, time,
Is eternity... "
(Just a random trivia note for the heck of it... They are one of the best bands I ever saw, at Finnegan's Rainbow in Long Beach CA where David Bowie who was an unknown, opened for them. I like this song, but "White Bird" is my favorite, and one of a few that people still associate with me to this day. If anyone hasn't heard it, highly recommended. David LaFlamme, who had been a concert violinist with the Utah symphony, was astonishing on violin, which I could appreciate having played it some too back in the day.)
Another very slow cup of coffee, and then off to vote!
Oh, why not; I'd make this a link above but it doesn't seem to work... for those who have some TIME to kill, like me right now, check out the violin crescendo...
Time for us to fly! Let's do this, voters!

That's better anyway. Usually they are just fundraisers and floor speeches, as the nominee is usually already chosen. Not this time!
A real convention and platform.
Still can't get over we have to ask Hillary for a ban on fracking.
Just another reason she is not the leader we need. The Clintons have sucked, and continue to suck via the 'foundation' every once of energy, dollars they can. BE GONE!
