For those not familiar, Hasidic/ultra-Orthodox communities like this often vote as a bloc, with the rebbe signaling which way to vote.
The Satmar have divided into two groups, lead by two brothers. The brother leading this group--the grand rebbe--is Aaron Teitelbaum.
Not many endorsements deliver votes, this one will deliver thousands in the northern suburban counties in New York. This gives the endorser enormous clout of course.
From several times removed sourcing, what I've seen is that Clinton asked for their vote, Sanders didn't.
New York is a complicated place.

OP
Bernie should have visited the rebbes instead of chasing a sit-down with the pope.

I would not want the endorsement of people who think women shouldn't be allowed to drive

(6,551 posts)1. Wow - great news.
This endorsement, unlike many others, actually will deliver a whole lot of votes.
Thanks for posting.

(62,444 posts)2. Ah, yes, they certainly do vote as a bloc
A case against the village is currently pending in federal district court; plaintiffs, who are asking for the village to be dissolved, say that Kiryas Joel is a theocracy whose existence violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, where local government leaders abuse the laws, such as those for tax-exempt status, zoning, and sanitation, to favor members of their own sect and persecute other Orthodox Jews. They also say that the leaders commit vote fraud by intimidating dissident voters and busing in non-residents.
And suing to permit them to exclude female bus drivers by the school district was a nice touch, too.
