TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) The Tunisian government has confirmed it has arrested a 28-year-old Tunisian reportedly linked to the U.S. consulate attack in Libya.
Photos: U.S. ambassador killed in Libya
Tunisian Interior Ministry spokesman Tarrouch Khaled said Wednesday that Ali Harzi was in custody in Tunis. Khaled tells The Associated Press "his case is in the hands of justice." He did not elaborate.
In Washington, the State Department had no comment. Earlier this month, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the U.S. has been looking into the arrests of two Tunisian men being detained in Turkey reportedly in connection with attacks on a consulate in Libya last month.
Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans died in the attack on the U.S. diplomatic post in the Libyan capital of Benghazi on Sept. 11.
This is a breaking news story. Check back for updates as they become available.

(2,345 posts)This is not the time to spike the football or gloat, but I really hope the President plays this in a low key matter of fact finding presidential way.
I hope it comes out that the people responsible have been tracked and monitored for weeks while investigators were getting enough evidence to convict these people who thought they could get away with attacking our Ambassador.

(4,507 posts)I don't think this is an instance for yuks.
I'm not blind to the political value of progress in the investigation for our side.
But I think it is inappropriate to be anything other than sober when dealing with anything that relates to the two real parts of this story - the loss of American lives and the search for those responsible.

(54,370 posts)It didn't happen the day before the debate, so Rolls-Ryan can't complain it was held back for that occasion, AND it didn't happen the weekend before the election, so Rolls-Ryan can't complain of it being used to boost their chances in the hours before election day.
Obama MUST be careful not to play this up too much. The media will do it for him. The more he plays it cool ("look, I said we'd get them, and we got them. It's not the first time. What's the big deal?" , the more the media will play it up. Fox will scream about the timing, but if Obama keeps it low key, he will sink their ship before it even gets out of port.

(242 posts)The Libyan government previously said they had arrested about 50 people in connection with the attack... and that was within a week of the event. Whatever happened to those suspects?

(24,411 posts)Ok, ok--I'm kind of exaggerating.
However, Mitt and the rest of the rabid Republicans--and their blowhard cohorts on right-wing radio--have hitched their wagon to these Benghazi conspiracy theories.
Obama has said all along that there was an investigation ongoing. He would share details as the FACTS were revealed.
If this situation is resolved and if Obama addresses the nation on this--to reveal the facts, then it's game over.
Republicans and Mitt lose so much credibility and Obama looks like the Commander in freakin Chief.

TUNIS, TUNISIA A Tunisian man who was arrested in Turkey earlier this month with reported links to the attack on a U.S. consulate in Libya has been returned to Tunisia and is facing terrorism charges, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a U.S. government official told CBS News that American investigators are in possession of some of the security camera video footage recorded during the attack. The official said the footage is of decent quality and investigators are reviewing it.
CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan reports that the State Department has footage from 10 cameras. The FBI obtained the footage from Libyans who removed it from the consulate compound days after the attack. The footage was recorded on non-infrared cameras and isn't complete.

(5,049 posts)In his blind rush to score a cheap political point he and his campaign stepped in it big time. Now we see just what a short sighted weakling he is in Foreign Policy. The President shows us how to lead - and how to bring international terrorists to justice.
Congratulations Mr. President!
