(115,982 posts)that the "joke" (which wasn't funny on any level) had racist implications despite what the participants in the skit may have intended. It's just dumb to tell jokes or stories that can be interpreted as racist, no matter what you claim you might have meant by them. This wan't on the same level as the joke that forced Earl Butz, the Secretary of Agriculture in the early '70s, to resign (if you don't know that story, just google him; that "joke" was overtly racist and horrifically offensive), but it was tone-deaf and dumb. You have to wonder how people can miss the implications and possible interpretations of some of the things they say.

(58,724 posts)It was actually one of the warmer reactions from the audience to the entire skit. De Blasio rapping, for example, appeared to be met with stunned silence.
CentralCoaster
(1,163 posts)As a whole, I think the audience was stunned but trying to be nice.
And Hillary's line was less offensive, but what the hell were they thinking?

(58,724 posts)The whole point of the bit is designed this way.
De Blasio says something that seems offensive - the audience reacts accordingly.
The Aaron Burr character does a take to the audience and says "I don't like jokes like that" - the audience laughs.
Clinton says "Cautious Politician Time" - the audience laughs some more and applauds a bit.
This is sort of a standard sitcom joke structure.

(58,724 posts)At no point did anyone utter the phrase "colored people".
The joke (such as it is) is based on thinking he meant one thing and then "humorously" finding out that he meant something else.
Like a skit where someone says "I can't believe he called me the n-word!" and everyone offers their sympathy and anger but it turns out she means "nincompoop".
The part of the skit that seemed much more racially insensitive happens before Hillary's cameo where De Blasio is rapping.
Have you watched the whole thing?

(58,724 posts)It was the biggest show on Broadway not all that long ago.
It features a musical number called Springtime for Hitler.
JackRiddler
(24,979 posts)And that makes all the difference.
(Also, The Producers isn't running for president of everybody, just looking to please its own audiences.)

(1,163 posts)Especially for a candidate whose husband just got done dismissing an entire culture with his public statements, this very week.
There are plenty other comedic angles that could have been used the spin of "Hamilton", they weren't thinking.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)The show ran for much of the decade with tours and regional productions ongoing all over the country and the world.
The musical was even more political incorrect than the 1968 movie it was based on, and yet still won 12 Tony Awards.
The song Springtime for Hitler is the centerpiece musical number in the show and includes several other goofs on Hitler including "Heil Myself" not to mention some very un-PC humor at the expense of gay characters.
Hillary had a brief cameo in a silly sketch at a charity event.
If you think her part was offensive, I wonder what you thought of de Blasio's rapping.
CentralCoaster
(1,163 posts)I didn't see the de Blasio's rapping.
Rapping by white folks isn't of itself offensive but it can sure be disturbing!
What was it like?

(10,650 posts)I can't believe you are defending this. Ok, maybe I can...
oberliner
(58,724 posts)Bizarre that you think some kind of coded message to racists was being sent out by the folks who created and participated in this sketch.
It was literally nothing but a cameo in a dumb sketch spoofing Hamilton.
Anyone who wants to make it something larger than that has an agenda of their own (most likely being that they don't like Hillary for one reason or another).
Curious to know if you found any other portion of the skit to be racist or just the part with Hillary?
For instance, de Blasio rapping.
Segami
(14,923 posts)the audience expressed instant disapproval.......
They're lucky someone didn't stand up and start heckling them outright.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)De Blasio says that phrase and gets that reaction. The actor playing Aaron Burr does a take to the audience and says "I don't like that jokes like that" - which gets a big laugh. Then Hillary says "Cautious Politician Time" and that gets an even bigger laugh followed by a little bit of applause.
This video shot from the audience bears that out:

(10,786 posts)It's humorously self-depreciating for powerful white politicians to compare their own lack of initiative and decisiveness to that of colored people!

(58,724 posts)The skit was stupid. The whole thing was stupid.
Remember this is an event that Guiliani showed up in drag for one year
It's meant to be a roast of NYC politicians who are good sports about being humiliated onstage for charity.
They often tie in popular Broadway shows and actors and there is nothing more popular right now than Hamilton, hence the premise of the skit.
Almost all of the jokes were groaners.
yourpaljoey
(2,166 posts)Now I get it. And, no, they were not pleased.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)Note the take from Burr to the audience and his line, which gets a laugh, leading up to Hillary's line which gets a bigger laugh and some applause.
The joke only works if the audience thinks de Blasio said something offensive at first but then realizes that he was saying something else. Granted it's not especially funny, but it's typical of the other jokes and skits at this event.
Did you see the moment right before with de Blasio rapping?

(58,724 posts)The time, it was Mayor de Blasio giving himself a bad rap.
The citys chief executive, with the unlikely help of pal Hillary Clinton, delved into hip-hop Saturday night at the annual Inner Circle production.
De Blasio shared the New York Hilton stage with Leslie Odom Jr., who plays Aaron Burr in the hit musical Hamilton, while unleashing his inner Run-BDB.

(58,724 posts)It cannot be coincidental that the people criticizing Hilary for this are those who already don't like her.
If this skit cameo had been Bernie and the Vatican visit had been Hilary all the outraged people would flip to the other side of each of those issues.
Hopefully folks are honest enough to recognize that at least.

(58,724 posts)Usually there is nothing the NYC press likes more than to be able to splash a story about a politician or celebrity caught in a racist gaffe.
I think the reporters at The Daily News and Newsday and some of the other local papers just didn't notice anything racist when they had covered the event initially.
It could be that the reporters were unfamiliar with the term (as many folks here have confessed to being).

If
Clinton says it: "people are making a big deal of nothing. It was a joke. People don't get it/didn't listen/taking it out of context. More right-wing nonsense and conspiracies trying to attack and prevent Hillary from being the first women president. Berniebros are desperate for anything. That joke was written by Bernie, it's his fault. Remember Bernie wants to destroy our nation by giving everyone free stuff."
If
Sanders says it: "more racist, sexist, tone deaf crap from Bernie and his berniebros. This campaign is a failure, such racist crap. Bernie hates women and people of color and will put them all in jail/revoke all gun laws/make right-wing hate groups national police/commie re-education camps/give poor people free stuff/bankrupt our nation giving away free stuff."
This is the sum of their reaction. The hate for Sanders on this site from certain groups is so awkward at this point , I really feel like I am on a right-wing wingnut blog like freeperville as the comments are identical ( the "free stuff" and "socialist" memes being the most blatant).

(58,724 posts)It's funny to see you write that "The hate for Sanders on this site from certain groups is so awkward at this point."
Do you not see the same kind of hate for Clinton on this site from certain groups as well?
There are attacks on Hillary that literally link to right-wing sites and sources.

(8,754 posts)While some may use the "wrong" newspaper source or attempt to regurgitate some old, worn attack line very few are actually sexist or personal attacks.
While I will freely admit I don't look at everything so that is my personal experiences.
Also reflective of my personal experiences is a constant and brutal attacks on Sanders policies (which is politics) and him as a person. Not the same as HRC. The most common being the very right-wing "free stuff" meme, it being word-for-word right-wing wingnut talking points. Next is the "socialist" meme. The red-scare hate-mongering kind of meme. The cherry on that sundae is something that makes what is happening even worse in Sanders case. It is the use of neo-nazi anti semitic, holocaust denial websites to proliferate nasty conspiracy theories.
These things are beyond the pale. As we go deeper into primary season they become worse and more frequent.
It's getting to be more than I can take and is very reminiscent of HRC supporters and HRC herself, in the 2008 campaign but even worse now.

Nice classic redirect though. I admitted stuff like that does happen to HRC but the OPs you cited are mild in comparison to the "free stuff" and "socialist" and anti semetic hate sites used against Sanders and then you decided to attack me with OPs I did not create or post on.
Your actions only prove my point.
