(602 posts)The State Department received emails alleging that the attack was taking place for multiple reasons, that a terrorist group had taken credit for the attack and that the video was responsible. We were receiving mixed messages, just as the Obama Administration has said.

(1,660 posts)Nothing contradicts what the WH has already said about this issue. Plus the stories just say that a group claimed responsibility on facebook and it mentions another group also claimed responsibility. There were also reports that it was totally spontaneous and thus these groups might have taken advantage of the confusion to claim responsibility for an attack they didn't do. I'm not sure what conservatives would have wanted? For the WH just to say a certain group actually did the attack, when it wasn't known for certain?

(1,660 posts)Obama called it an "Act of terror" the next day and the day after and in the days after.
Also it is a terrorist act whether it was planned or whether it was spontaneous.
Obama did not say the attack was caused by the youtube video. Even if it had been, it would have still been a terrorist act. So what is your point?

(1,835 posts)This will not be a story this time tomorrow night. Obama's Leno appearance and swing state campaign tour will steal the spotlight. Not to mention that Libya has been litigated to death and is baked into the cake so to speak. Also, not to mention that the administration discussed Answar-Al-islam or whatever they call themselves being involved on 9/12 itself per the Reuters article.
Also, what is the point of spreading this news??

(13,992 posts)The whole Benghazi tragedy is a bullshit non-issue.
A group of islamist militants used civil unrest to mask a direct strike on the consulate in Benghazi. It worked. For several days afterwords, it was assumed that the whole thing was the actions of a mob, until more evidence came to light that untimately proved otherwise.
Case closed.
But in fact, if you look at the statements made by the White House during the week or so after the attack, their every utterance was always accompanied by the phrase "as far as we know" or "to the best of our knowledge." Until it had the facts, the White House was not being definitive one way or the other.
Obama did EXACTLY what a responsible adult would do -- hold off until all the evidence has been gathered. Don't tip off the militants that we're investigating. Don't shoot first and ask questions later. Only an asshat Republican who wants to score political points off the dead body of Ambassador Christopher Stevens would try to make this an issue, and that's exactly what they're doing.

(6,286 posts)And the "email story" is a complete nontroversy. Any time something blows up, 50 extremist groups jockey for position to take credit. I read this story this morning and it didn't even raise an eyebrow with me. I actually hope the Republicans focus on this for the next two weeks. It will move the narrative to "foreign affairs" which is the exact debate where Obama took Mitt behind the woodshed.

(134 posts)It was an extremist act? So what. No matter what the motivation of course it was!!! And a terrorist act too!!
I think the repubs are fools to dwell on how scary the world is right now-Romney showed he is not up to the job of being commander in chief and people do not trust him on foreign policy. So by talking about Libya over and over it only means people will be scared and won't trust Romney who doesn't know where Syria is, to be in charge.

(7,816 posts)pundits, and dem leaders listen to actual quotes re Benghazi they would see the WH was very careful in their wording...and if media took off on a tangent on their own, it's due to their own bias and/or needs.
Still...it is the ONLY topic on RW radio (which is 90% of all talk radio across the nation and probably more than that in swing states). So-called experts are chiming in on how this is the worst action by a president in recent memory, including Watergate. Cover-up. Scandal. Deaths. Incompetence....over and over and over. I don't see why this meme isn't rebutted more strongly. I am hopeful that they have plans to correct public perception soon.
