As quickly became apparent, President Obama and Mitt Romney walked onto the debate stage at Lynn University with two very different strategies. Romneys, to prevent himself as a steady moderate and not a return to the Bush era, and Obamas, to attack Romney relentlessly as an untested and dangerous alternative.
Conservative foreign policy leaders couldnt be more upset by Obamas foreign policy. Throughout the campaign, theyve accused Obama of being weak, feckless, appeasing, ill-informed and downright dangerous. Yet when Romney met Obama on stage in Boca Raton, it was often in the spirit of agreement.
The standout example was Afghanistan. Romney has attacked Obama for months over his stated withdrawal deadline for American troops at the end of 2014 but in recent weeks hes put his plan for the future of Afghanistan more in line with Obamas. That new tone was on display at Lynn University.
Were going to be finished by 2014, and when Im president, well make sure we bring our troops out by the end of 2014, Romney said. The commanders and the generals there are on track to do so. Weve seen progress over the past several years. The surge has been successful and the training program is proceeding apace.
Romneys Afghanistan view was so close to Obamas in that answer, he could have been a surrogate for the president in the spin room afterwards.

(656 posts)....but all you have to do is look at Romney's foreign policy advisors, alot of Bush's Neo Cons. Wanna bet he folds under pressure from them to go to war if he's elected? It doesn't matter any more what Romney says, it's who he has hiding behind the curtain that worries me.

(2,795 posts)Obama was great in pointing out that although Romney now agrees with all the good things Obama did, Romney initially opposed everything from the auto bailout, to going into Pakistan to get Bin Ladin, to supporting ouster of Mubarak, etc etc showing that Romney lacks the judgment to make the right calls on the tough decisions. He mentioned how Mitt praised GW Bush's economic leadership and Dick Cheney's misguided policies.
Most of the media talkers are ignoring Obama's central message of the importance of all of Romney's wrong stands vs Obama's superior judgment in determining the best person for the job.
