2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie was more welcoming to a bird on his podium than his wife by his side
Theres an awkward video of Bernie Sanders and Bernies interaction with his wife Jane Sanders thats making the rounds, and its not a good look for Bernie. Senator Sanders was speaking in Madison, Wisconsin, when the snub against Jane happened. The Democratic presidential candidate spoke at a campaign stop on Saturday, March 26, with Bernie being exuberant over his recent victory however, during that celebration, Sanders made a move against Jane that isnt going down well over the Interwebs.<...>
As reported by the Blue Nation Review, Bernie was celebrating a great election night, but in the moment that Sanders was expressing his joy, video caught Sanders acknowledging Jane on Bernies all-important right-hand side but at the same time making a motion to wave Jane away when she stepped forward.
Bernie can be heard either telling Jane not to stand there or dont stand next to me, with an arm movement that pushed Jane back gently, as if to instruct her that he didnt want her standing there the whole time. It may have been an innocent instruction towards his wishes at the moment but its not being received well online.
With Bernies wife, Jane, being held up as a woman who has long supported her husband, to see Bernie wave Jane away or tell his wife not to stand there is being interpreted as Bernie not wanting to share the spotlight with his help mate or right-hand woman. As expected, such a gesture is making people online react with fury.
<...>
So, could Bernie waving away his wife become the awkward Howard Dean scream moment for Sanders? Time will tell, but reactions pouring into social media dont bode well for Birdie Sanders, who is being accused of being more welcoming to a bird on his podium than his wife by his side, sharing a moment of victory.

An Apology
Sunday afternoon The New Civil Rights Movement published an article on Senator Bernie Sanders with a video showing him speaking to his wife, Dr. Jane Sanders, as the two were onstage. The article inaccurately described their interaction, and even incorrectly reported his words. The Senator appeared to say to Dr. Sanders, "Don't stand there," and we reported that as, "Don't stand next to me."
Worse, however, was the tone of the article. It described the Vermont Senator as a "cad," which we have no reason to believe is fair.
snip-
This was not newsworthy, and that we suggested it was by publishing it did a disservice to our readers and to the Senator and his wife. For all this we apologize to our readers and to Senator and Mrs. Sanders. We were wrong. Our readers, and Senator and Dr. Sanders deserve better. Again, we apologize, to you all.
The article has been taken down.
Readers were, rightly, quick to challenge us, and we appreciate your words. Every comment on our website, on our Facebook page, and every email has or will be been read. It's impossible to respond to them all, so we offer this by way of a thank you, and we ask you to give us another chance with your trust.

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
This is a nasty smear from a right wing hack, accusing Sen Sanders of sexism and mistreatment of his wife is way over-the-top and the kind of thing Skinner said we need to stop.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Mar 28, 2016, 01:02 PM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is a stupid article but it's not against the tos to be stupid.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The video is real. The fact that some DUers don't like it doesn't make it worthy of a hide.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is a pathetic, ridiculous smear, but this is a political message board. I'm a Sanders supporter, and do not agree with the opinion. However, I don't believe it violates DU TOS, and people are able to refute it.
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: SO fucking HIDEOUS.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I wish we could be better than this... I don't know much about the source, I did a quick Google but didn't get much. I will say that this post is just OTT, Bernie although not my candidate is not a misogynist which seems to be the gist of the article. A very frustrating hide, but a hide. -Agschmid

I am not saying that in some cases that it doesn't happen because people are inherently assholes,
But its not as big a thing as they protest.
I also find it funny that most supporters of Bernie would gleefully drop a vote for Elizabeth Warren.

(65,408 posts)in all of them the body language is clearly affectionate, and he always has her next to him, and usually with his arm around her and a big smile on his face. He also is often saying nice things about her.
This makes me think that he was just trying to keep her from getting in the way of his gesticulating arm as he began to speak again, because he knows he always flings his arms out (especially his right arm) and gesticulates widely when he speaks.

in my daycare over 18 years until my kids grew up, his gesture seemed very familiar.
I recognized his action as exactly the sort of thing I always did with my kids (my own two and my daycare kids). I was always gently moving them out of the way (often with an outstretched arm as in the video, or with a gentle hip push on the way by) when I thought that if they didn't get out of the way I might accidentally smack them while moving around to take care of business. Or I would always move their cups away from the edge of the table or away from where one of the kids was bouncing around or gesticulating in a way that could easily knock the cup over and spill its contents.

Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT

But, I watched it, and I'm so relieved to find that the implied message behind your OP was disingenuous in its accusation, and at the same time, I'm so disappointed in you, Cali_Democrat, for posting this invented narrative as fact.
For anyone who hasn't watched the video, Bernie is standing at the podium, making large gestures with his arms, as he always does. His wife steps up to tell him something and he quickly tells her, "Don't stand there," so as not to get hit by his arms; so she recognizes his concern and says, "Ok, what? Oh, ok..." and hurriedly steps back again...as he continues with the arm gestures.
It's two best friends, lovers, companions, communicating with each other.

(65,408 posts)his arms while talking, he could have just been asking for room to the side to continue his gesticulating. Or he could have been being a butt. However, I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt most of the time.
Besides, people--male or female--who get into positions of power usually do have tendencies toward self-absorption and projection of dominance. In general I find such attitudes and behaviors obnoxious, but I am never surprised to find them in those who seek to wield power.
What I am most interested in is what that power will be wielded for--i.e., whom it will be used to benefit--and how it will be wielded. We have 25 years of evidence that Bernie tries to wield power to benefit the 99% in their ongoing contest with the 1%. If he mainly wanted power to benefit himself, he would be a whole lot richer (just as other politicians get a whole lot richer with even less time in national politics).
Furthermore, Bernie was clearly reluctant to run for president. He was hoping Warren (or some other warrior for the 99%) would step up. One reason his campaign didn't do enough early before a year ago to lay a solid foundation for the primaries was that he was not planning to run. I don't think he has ever wanted to be president, and I think he would have gladly avoided the job (and especially the campaign) this time if he didn't feel that someone needed to represent the rest of us in the country's political arena.

I didn't realize that wasn't Bernie and Jane in the video. It looks just like them.
Edit to add:
Edited to add the sarcasm tag for the poster cui bono who, after 24 hours of spamming me with dishonest questions, thinks she is being clever by pretending that I was confused by who was in the video. I don't need a website to tell me what or who I just saw in a video. So I'm adding the SARCASM tag because it was a sarcastic comment about who was in the video. It's OBVIOUS who was in the video.

(16,954 posts)Which is impossible, since the video speaks for itself.

But you won't answer a simple question. Your post implies that the site said that Bernie and Jane are not in the video. I'm trying to find out where you got the idea that the site or anyone else has said that?
Why won't you tell me how you came to that thought? Or where the site said that?

R B Garr
(16,954 posts)Let's review.
--Your post 251 orders someone to take their post down because you claim the video has been debunked and you reference a website that has supposedly debunked the video.
--My post said the video speaks for itself.
My post said the video speaks for itself because I don't need a website to tell me what I saw. I know what I saw. No one needs to tell me what I saw. The video speaks for itself.
This is going on 24 hours now that you keep insisting you don't understand. Obviously Bernie and Jane were in the video. Obviously...

R B Garr
(16,954 posts)You think you are being clever, but it''s very dishonest.

Your post #274 is where you said that. So again, what gave you the idea that anyone said it was not Bernie or Jane in the video?
It really is a straightforward question and anyone who was actually trying to have a real discussion would simply answer it by showing what gave them that impression or by saying they misinterpreted it. I'm not sure why you are making a little game out of this. Well I'm pretty sure...
If you would just answer this question I have another for you about what you think the video is saying.

Here, I gathered them together so you don't fry your brain having to split your responses into five subthreads. And at the rate you're going that would turn into 25!
Okay.... so...
You're asking me to explain how it's not obvious that that is Bernie and Jane in the video. So again, I have to ask, what made you think anyone said that it wasn't Bernie or Jane in the video? Why won't you answer that question? You implied as much, so what brought you to that conclusion?
If you apply logic you'll see that that is a perfectly reasonable question. If you answer it we can continue to have a discussion. You keep responding, so I assume you are looking for a discussion, but I don't know where to take it if I don't know how you came to that idea. Logic will help you not short circuit again too. It's very calming.
So what was it that gave you that idea? Where did that site (or I?) say that it wasn't Bernie and Jane in the video?
.
R B Garr
(16,954 posts)this childish game. Talk about short circuiting...
It's obvious from the posts what I meant. You are just trying to pretend that I'm confused about who was in the video when I was obviously being sarcastic.
I don't need a website to tell me what I saw in the video. It's obvious what was in the video. Wasn't it? It was obvious who was in the video. Right?
cui bono
(19,926 posts)Again, I ask you, what gave you the impression that anyone said it was not Bernie or Jane in the video?
You implied it, I just want to know why. You even asked me to explain how it's not obvious that it's them, which follows that you think I or someone I'm talking about (the site) said it wasn't them. So again... what makes you think that anyone said that?
.
R B Garr
(16,954 posts)I don't need a website to tell me.
cui bono
(19,926 posts)But that's not what you said earlier. You implied that someone said it was not them. So I'm trying to figure out why you said that.
But I'll take you trying to turn it around now as a concession that you misspoke. So yes, of course it is obvious who is in the video. That was never in question.
.
R B Garr
(16,954 posts)This is really just hostility you are showing. I added the sarcasm tag for you. That was last night. 24 hours ago. My original post was 48 hours ago (over 2 days ago).
So, it's obvious who is in the video, right? Right.
cui bono
(19,926 posts)by my copy/paste of your post. What you said was not sarcasm. That makes no sense.
So did you not think someone said it was not Bernie or Jane in the video? Why didn't you just say that to begin with? (19,926 posts)As you keep replying I thought you wanted to discuss this, but as I mentioned earlier, that answer is needed in order to continue the discussion because the very nature of it depends on how and why you got the idea that anyone said it was not Bernie or Jane in the video.

(19,926 posts)It's kind of like when my 5 year old niece was sitting in a car seat that her brother wanted to sit in and it was his turn to sit in it. She just wouldn't get out. She was having quite the tantrum. I told her we weren't going anywhere until she let her brother have it because he has already shared his toy and given up that seat and I wasn't going to ask him to compromise again. Once she realized she was not going to win she decided to change the subject and said she was cold and could she have her jacket. I said yes, that she could come out and get it to put it on. So she got out of the seat and put her jacket on and then her brother got in it and she got in the other car seat.
So yes, it has always been obvious that it's Bernie and Jane in the video. Feel better now?
.
R B Garr
(16,954 posts)So.....since you agree it's OBVIOUS who was in the video, then it is you who can't admit that you're harassing me for reasons other than who was in the video.
And I told you I played along so people could see how dishonest you are with this 48 hours of pure nonsense. My first posts answered your questions and were in response to you ordering someone to delete this thread because you found a website that disputed the video. But there is no disputing the video. (9,535 posts)Your link does not include the alleged video. During his San Diego event, Jane was at his side and he was smiling with arm around her, embracing her multiple times during the night.
If he did ask her not to stand in a particular space, it could be:
* because she would be blocking a teleprompter
* because she would be blocking a supporter on the stage behind him
* because there was gum on the stage
* because of some Secret Service concern raised
* because there was something else he wanted/needed her to do
* because someone else was about to join him on stage
They are an obviously loving couple, and this is much ado about nothing from a known Clinton backer. Apparently her campaign is getting rather desperate.
