(1,166 posts)It's painful to see him in that uncomfortable position after racing around all day long, every day, working so hard to get into a position to really help this country get itself turned around. He is the real deal. (I was thinking just a little while ago after seeing the title of a post elsewhere on this site that called him a "purist" in an extremely mocking tone... thinking that maybe what angers supporters of the other candidate is his sincerity and the sincerity of his supporters. We're all supposed to understand that we're in a post-sincerity universe now and the fact that someone who doesn't lie or double deal or otherwise be "realistic" in 21st century (corporate) terms is understood as threatening and insulting by people who have adjusted to what they thought were the current pragmatic norms and don't want to face the truth they always had a choice. How dare he!)

(631 posts)If successful, Bernie will change the face of political contests from Bush-Clinton era, store-bought pay-to-play 'campaign events' of stale 'policy positions' back to a debate of ideas like the Lincoln Douglas debates.
Such appeal to the sincerity of voters is made possible through our 'small world' technology of transparency. I project that many future leaders will follow Bernie's ground-breaking campaign approach, if they are as smart and sincere as Bernie Sanders.

Pedestrians kept at least a block away from Hillary's Madison event.
At her typical exclusive fundraisers, held in gated private estates, we see photos of cops directing traffic, but people have been able to assemble on public streets to watch her arrive and depart, and even to wave a few signs and demonstrate. No mas, boss!
In Madison, the entire block surrounding the venue will be "closed to pedestrians", not to mention vehicular traffic. We're talking public sidewalks and streets in the heart of a state university. We're talking a Monday afternoon on the first day of classes after spring break.
Hey! Hillary don't need no stinkin' right of assembly or freedom of speech in her America!
Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will speak in Madison on Monday, two days after her Democratic opponent, Bernie Sanders, drew a large crowd here and touted his campaign's momentum.
Clinton will make remarks to invited guests at UW-Madison's Gordon Commons, 770 W. Dayton Street, at 3:45 p.m. Doors open at 2:45 p.m. A UW-Madison news release says the event is not open to the campus community or the public.
Because of Clinton's appearance, Lake Street will be closed to traffic between Dayton and Johnson streets, starting at about noon, and to pedestrians after 3 p.m., until the event is over.

42. Clinton event blatant violation of UW policy requiring it be open to public.
According to the University's own, formal announcement of this Clinton event, the Clinton campaign is in blatant violation of university policy, which CLEARLY AND EXPLICITLY STATES THAT SAID EVENT BE PUBLIC!
Paragraph 5 of the university's statement of policy states:
During an election campaign, such as the primary or general election, each
recognized candidate for public office may hold one public meeting at a
University auditorium. In addition, each political party may hold one public
meeting at a University auditorium on behalf of its candidates for national office,
and one public meeting on behalf of its candidates for statewide office.

Clinton to hold Monday event at Gordon
March 27, 2016
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will hold an event on the University of WisconsinMadison campus on Monday afternoon.
The event, to be held at Gordon Dining & Events Center, is being ticketed by the Clinton campaign and is not open to the campus community or public.
Both Democratic and Republican candidates are crisscrossing the state in advance of the April 5 Wisconsin primary. Per UW policy, each candidate may hold one event on campus each election.

(94,675 posts)Yes, almost beating Hillary Clinton in the Iowa caucus helped, but a more tangible sign was that the campaign had chartered a jet to make the trip from Des Moines to Manchester, New Hampshire for immediate deployment for the Granite State's primary on Feb. 9. Sanders famously travels coach on commercial airlines. Sightings of him stuffing his luggage into the overhead bins is a minor Internet meme.
The plane carried Sanders, his wife Jane, and campaign staff and their gear in the more spacious forward cabin, as well as a full compliment of journalists - referred to as the "Travelling Press" - in the economy seats. The flight took off shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday, a few hours behind schedule but still ahead of the blizzard forecast for the Des Moines area Monday night.

(34,112 posts)That looks so uncomfortable. I agree this is probably an old picture from before Secret Service protection but still. He has worked so hard for this. I can't imagine having the kind of energy or commitment he is putting out there.
At least he slept. I sat next to Ted Stevens once on a very long, very conversational flight from Kansas City to Seattle. He talked and talked and talked. He was in the middle seat as well, I had the aisle seat and was reading Will Pitt's book The Greatest Sedition is Silence: Four Years in America. Probably that book is what started the conversation!

(2,812 posts)activity, to go along with the physical. He should be using that time to catch up on current events, working on foreign policies, reviewing briefings, coming up with a new speech, etc.. He already looks years older than his actual age. As I said, I am questioning whether his body can handle four years of the stress required.
In a lighter vein,
Clinton, Bush, Obama all got very grey during their time in office. Bernie's hair has no where to go.

And you seem to have no concept of the adrenalin that has to run through your body to give enthusiastic one hour speeches to large audiences and how fatigued it leaves you afterwards.
I had concerns about Bernie's age before I watched him campaign over the last couple of months, sometimes giving 4 speeches in multiple states on the same day.
