Related: About this forumAnecdotal: Hillary supporters breaking for Kasich in Ohio
I was just on the phone with a business partner in Ohio after she texted me a photo of her ballot. She she is a die-hard Hillary supporter. So I was taken aback when I got the photo of her ballot showing she voted for Kasich.
I asked why and she said that her die-hard "consensus group" of Hillary supporters decided that they believe Hillary has the nomination and it's more important for them to vote for Kasich to avoid Trump getting the nomination. Their belief is that if they can get Kasich's numbers up, it will aid the push toward a brokered convention and keep Trump out. They are so scared of a Trump candidacy in the general with the possibility that he might win, that they all skipped out on voting for Hillary and instead chose Kasich.
Weird right? Meanwhile, hopefully more felt this way and Bernie is laughing all the way to the bank in Ohio.

(594 posts)Dems in OH to vote Kasich, and there has been speculation as to whether they are Clinton supporters who feel that she has OH in the bag so they can throw a protest vote against Drumpf or whether they're more conservative/moderate working-class white Dems who likewise wish to protest Drumpf. This is the first post I've seen where Democrats voting Kasich have been identified as Clinton or Sanders supporters. If there are as many Dems voting for Kasich as the media are making it seem, it will be very interesting to see how this will affect the Democratic race.

(3,660 posts)She lives in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. She's probably late fifties. Big Hillary supporter and fan. Won't even consider for a second that Bernie could be a better candidate or could win.
I mentioned the last debate, and she said the news proved Hillary cleaned Bernie's clock. I asked "What about the standing ovation at the end?" She replied that it was nice of them to give both candidates a standing ovation. I then asked about them chanting "Bernie! Bernie!" and she said the audience was just stacked with his supporters. I gave up after that.

(3,017 posts)The current view among campaign insiders appears to be that Ohio is likely in play on the Democratic side and Bernie could win. Perhaps these Hillary supporters are starting to realize that they would be OK Feeling the Bern but need a rationalization for abandoning Hillary.
And don't tell them this, but I have seen analysts say it will actually be better for Trump if Kasich wins Ohio and stays in the race. Under that school of thought, Trump has a bigger chance of losing he nomination if the race gets down to Trump versus Cruz with everybody else out and a lot of states still to go.

(3,660 posts)At least for the group I was referring to. I talked to her after the text because I was initially upset at her for voting in a Republican and not Bernie or at least Democrat and wanted to know what the heck was going on, because I knew her to be a Democrat and proud Hillary supporter.
She explained to me that Hillary had this, but she just could not risk the possibility of Trump getting the presidency and that this was strategic to get a brokered convention and protect against Trump.
She even posted this on FB this morning "First time ever voting Republican but the consensus told me it was best to vote for Kasich today. I hope Hillary will forgive me"

(3,660 posts)It's my wife's birthday and we were out all day after voting and she is taking a nap, so I thought I'd post that and check in. I originally thought it was just really weird that she did that. Now after your post and others, I think it might be a little more widespread.

(1,217 posts)and she must be in an 'open' precinct where the voter can for anyone and your party registration is irrelevant. Can anyone explain how this works? Does anyone have a map or listing of open/closed areas of the state? Thanks!

(5,126 posts)The entire State votes the same way. You request your ballot when you vote. Whichever ballot you request causes you to be registered in that party. So, you may have identified and voted D for the last 20 years, but if you request an R ballot, you get one and become registered R.
Changing my registration is the only think holding me back from voting for Kasich today. I don't think I can do it.

(496 posts)1. This will hurt Hillary, obviously, and makes a lot of assumptions about future events.
2. A brokered convention will make Trump stronger - if the Rep establishment can't stop him now they can't stop him then, they're just delaying the inevitable and are going to allow him to prove his strength and their disarray.

(3,411 posts)In the WH, Kasich would do more harm - he would have the full cooperation of the GOP. Trump I think would keep the GOP in full disarray.
So Hillary groups that are participating in this little game are playing with fire (imo). Helps my candidate, but dayum! Are they really thinking this through?
