Hip-hop star Killer Mike may be a little green when it comes to politics, but it was actually the verdant weed itself that helped draw his attention to surging presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
The “Run the Jewels” rapper, an avid Sanders supporter, said the Vermont senator first caught his eye when he was scrolling through social media earlier this year while high on marijuana.
"Smoking a joint and reading his tweets," the rapper, whose real name is Michael Render, responded, after he was asked how he became a fan of Sanders.
Render had been speaking with reporters backstage during Sunday night’s Democratic 2016 debate in Charleston, S.C., where he had been invited to work as a spin-room surrogate for Sanders.
Render has been an outspoken supporter of Sanders for months, having endorsed the Democratic candidate at a November rally after the duo had lunch together in the rapper’s hometown of Atlanta.
