What's Next For Voting Rights with Eric Holder's resignation?

Posted in the African American Group

So my first thought with his resignation was: What about Voting Rights?

We definitely took a massive hit in summer of 2013. That was followed later in the summer with Trayvon Martin's murderer going free.

And since then - the hits just keep coming.

What's next? He was but one of a few high level Democratic Party members (perhaps us every day folks too) who "got" that.

I placed this back here so we could have an honest discussion that doesn't dissolve to what the "magical mythical so and so" is going to do when they are elected in 2016 . . . Which will be impossible without our very important voting bloc.

Do you know who Mr. Holder's sister in law is? His world has been framed by racism and racial prejudice. I think if he's a sap and doesn't go get "paid' - he's now unleashed. Much as I can't wait to hear President Obama take the bigots in America to task when he leaves office - I'm even more eager to read/hear what Holder has to say or do.

I've got a feeling Holder is going to go up one side of white America and back down the other. Can't wait to read his book where the holds the mirror up!

I also wonder - if he has thoughts to go for the SCOTUS. Since he could certainly replace Ginsberg.

We GOTV.

I don't believe the polls in ths election. These same folks were wrong on Cantor. I think - Jason Carter is going to give a big black eye down in GA . . . But that's it. Everything else is open.

I really need folks to vote like your daughters life and the black friend they had in the third grade depends on it.

Eric Holder: A nation of cowards

In honor of Attorney General Eric Holder's announcement today, I'd like to invite you to listen to the speech he gave to staff at the Department of Justice during Black History Month 2009. No U.S. Attorney General has ever spoken more boldly or acted more aggressively on behalf of civil rights for all Americans.

I hope he finds a way to continue the fight when he steps down.

Holder, per #DOJ official, has no immediate plans to step down and wants to focus on causes like #Ferguson during remaining days.

AG Holder to step down following six-year tenure

By Steve Benen

———————-

Political procedures aside, Holder is leaving the Attorney General’s office with a legacy more impressive than much of the political world generally appreciates.

Regular readers may recall that I’ve long been impressed with Holder’s progressive accomplishments, which haven’t always been front-page news, but which have made a significant difference in the lives of millions of Americans.

The A.G., for example, has shown amazing leadership on the issue of LGBT rights. He’s challenged Republican restrictions on voting rights. He’s fought for sentencing reforms. He’s condemned “Stand Your Ground” laws and showed effective leadership during the crisis in Ferguson. He cleared the way for Colorado and the state of Washington to pursue marijuana legalization. He’s worked to reverse the disenfranchisement of the formerly incarcerated.

You wouldn't know this if you read GD right now. There are a few having a hatefest on Holder right now. No wonder the man is stepping down. He is hated almost as much as this President. I can't for a minute imagine why, oh wait I believe I got it!

I also hoped we'd get a Congress that would be more interested in governance than partisanship. An atmosphere that would give the administration and the AG full latitude to deal with things like voter suppression, domestic terrorism, second amendment clarification and other national cancers.

Silly me.

Good job with the limited options, Eric. Your place in history is permanent.

Holder had to spend a great deal of effort rebuilding the voting rights section. The DOJ did a tremendous job in the Texas voter id case. The DOJ did a great deal of the work and really helped in that case. Right now the DOJ is involved in the Ohio and Wisconsin cases as well as the North Carolina case.

The work started by Holder will continue
