Cuningham: Army must always plan for the challenges ahead
Published: 12:03 AM, Mon Feb 04, 2013

Retired Gen. Gordon Sullivan, former Army chief of staff, made an interesting point recently on Fort Bragg.

He said that from the Army's viewpoint, it's not "post-war," it's "pre-war."

In other words, no matter what the Army has been through, there's always the need to be ready for whatever is next. That's increasingly hard to do with federal financial uncertainty.

Those numbers may be another reason to open more jobs to women, thereby expanding the pool of potential soldiers.

unhappycamper comment: And there you have it. The reason women are going into combat arms is to expand "the pool of potential soldiers."

Back in my day we called the draft the cannon fodder machine.
