The statement was a bit more unhinged than Nutters previous one on the matter, released on behalf of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, of which he is the president, where he said: NRA officials today blamed everyone but themselves for the conditions that permitted the monstrous attack on the children and teachers in Sandy Hook Elementary School. They said that gun laws dont work and that pursuing legislation is a waste of time. They proposed instead the equivalent of an arms race.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors Statement, released December 21st, also called on new legislation to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, strengthen background checks, and strengthen the penalties for straw purchases of gunsall ideas which the mayor has supported for some time.

(17,502 posts)of putting armed cops in schools, and was channeling Tipper Gore about the video games. Barbara Boxer thinks putting National Guard troops in schools is a better idea.
Even though I'm not a fan of Wayne's idea, no one has put forth a legitimate argument against it. If it really was a bad idea, I would think there would be experts in security and firearms training on the air pointing out why it would be a bad idea with logical and cogent arguments. Instead we are left with:
TV pundits, who are not qualified in much of anything including journalism, screaming the word "stupid" at the top of their lungs. The same TV pundits who send their kids to private schools that probably have armed guards.
Blaming anyone but the shooter is a cop out.

(18,318 posts)"Already, there are an estimated 10,000 sworn officers serving in schools around the country, most of them armed and employed by local police departments, according to a membership association for the officers. Still, theyre deployed at only a fraction of the countrys approximately 98,000 public schools, and their numbers have declined during the economic downturn."
So it seems that the "dumbass NRA idea" has been in effect for some time, and in more flush times, even dumber. Where were the complainants then? Nowhere, because that was before the idea was smeared with the "N" word: National Rifle Association.
In this story, both sides are heard with one individual fearing a cross-fire between murderers and armed police. Has this happened before, anyone?
One thing for sure: We have had armed security in our schools for generations, just not enough of it, and it seems, little or none at elementary schools. Having two or more trained, armed security at each school full-time may not be for everyone, esp. those who still dream of a gun-free zone in some distant future. But Congress can appropriate funds for schools (thus lessening the local financial burden), and let individual schools CHOOSE for themselves what they wish to do. Or not (Philadelphia's schools have no armed security).
Incidentally, another confirmation that the one (1) armed security at Columbine was off-campus in a nearby park.
