Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumI'm in Texas, and someone was going on
about some coming UN initiative and guns and possible ammo shortage. I suspect there is nothing to this, but I would like to read up on whatever they are alluding to. Can someone here point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Melissa

(17,502 posts)The focus is mostly standardizing military small arms.
The NRA and the Canadian NFA (I like keeping track of their gun rights groups.) oppose it because they think it could open the door to a ban on civilian ownership of any firearms or regulations set by an international organization with some unsavory members. From what I understand, US and European manufactures are mostly for it because it is easier dealing with one regulation than trying to figure out the regulations of each country. It is kind of like being a billing and coding specialist in the US vs one in Canada.
One of the claims the NRA makes is that if you buy, say a Glock, the US government would have to tell the Austrian government (the source country). I think that is either a misreading or a lie.

While trying to keep them out of the hands of terrorists, pirates, and other unsavory characters is a good thing, the part I have a problem with when it comes to insurgents and how the treaty defines "legitimate government". As the saying goes, one person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter.

(12,072 posts)It will be a UN treaty. The terms of the treaty are still being discussed. It isn't in final form yet.
It is supposed to regulate international trade in firearms. American gunners are afraid that it will have repercussions inside the U.S. regarding their rights. Until we see the final draft of the treaty we don't know what it will and won't do.

(768 posts)for such a remark, but let slime like this slide. The layers of hypocrisy displayed by the "compassionate restrictionists" run miles deep.
