1. this should be good

Explanation
The genetic fallacy is committed when an idea is either accepted or rejected because of its source, rather than its merit.
Even from bad things, good may come; we therefore ought not to reject an idea just because of where it comes from, as ad hominem arguments do.
Equally, even good sources may sometimes produce bad results; accepting an idea because of the goodness of its source, as in appeals to authority, is therefore no better than rejecting an idea because of the badness of its source. Both types of argument are fallacious.

I doubt you'll find many that argue against that. I believe the point is that if you try to broad brush paint gun owners as racist because of the actions of a few morons, then you are indeed crossing the line.

7. He is an icon of the gun culture and an NRA board member.

As much as you try to pretend that the gun culture is just about marksmanship and technology, it is a fact that it is very right-wing. The gun nuts at the NRA conference in that video seemed pretty excited about what Nugent was saying.

Of course, I'm sure that any gun nuts trolling DU is going to be smart enough to pretend not to like Ted Nugent. But over at FR I'm sure they're a lot more open about their loyalties.

18. You seem to be under the impression

that those of us that are pro RKBA are members of and/or supporters of the NRA and all that they do. That is stereotypical and lazy thinking. I think Ted Nugent is an ass and I would not walk across the street to listen to him speak on guns or to go to his concert, even if it were free.

24. Of course the NRA panders to the right.

Most of the support for the second amendment comes from the right.

As I've said before, this could change overnight. Literally in the space of 24 hours.

There are already plenty of Democrats given high scores and endorsed by the NRA. There is no reason why they could not all be.

26. LOL

This is a shining example of why gun-relgionists on DU are to be ignored.

They CONSTANTLY say "prove it", and when you do, their reply is "LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

Their time-wasting and increase-my-post-count-so-I-appear-valid tactics are as transparent as the NRA's lies.

8. Historically gun control supporters

have had a great many racists in their midst.

Easier to keep a downtrodden minority downtrodden when they're disarmed.

But I wouldn't consider it fair to use the couple of racists in your company to condemn the entire movement.

I don't think you're a racist simply because you're part of philosophy that also contains racists.

That is fair right?

10. Being called a racist is the only insult that I have ever recieved in the Gungeon ...

that I found truly offensive.

My family lives in a large home that was once a hotel and we have had both Blacks and Hispanics room with us for free or for a very small amount of money when we thought they needed help. I wonder if those who have accused me of being racist would do the same if they had the room in their home. (In some cases our attempts to help others regardless of race have proven successful but unfortunately this is not always been the result. Perhaps that is all a considerate person can ever hope for. Some of those we helped got their lives in order and really appreciated our effort, some are still in the process. None have ended up in serious problems with the authorities.)

My family and myself also have a number of close friends who are Black or Hispanic. Race has never mattered to me as I feel that good people are good people -- period.

That's one of the reasons I strongly support "shall issue" concealed carry in Florida as it doesn't discriminate. It matters not what your skin color is. As long as you can pass a criminal background check and meet the requirements, the state of Florida will issue you a carry permit. Often minorities live in far more dangerous areas than most Whites do and have far more reason to carry a weapon for self defense as Black on Black crime happens frequently and is extremely tragic!

I also firmly support the gun laws in Florida which allow any person of legal age to purchase a firearm for self defense if he/she can pass the NICS check. Gun control has a LONG history of racism and often in some areas of our nation civilian ownership of firearms is largely limited to only the rich, famous or well connected.

I have also introduced many people to the enjoyment of target shooting handguns. I do try to discourage people from purchasing a firearm as I feel that not everybody should own one. I ask anyone who has never owned a firearm a number of questions when they express interest in owning such a weapon and often have convinced them that their idea might be very foolish. I don't require them to answer my questions as they are often very personal but merely to look in a mirror and ask themselves the same questions and answer honestly.

When I used to shoot at at ranges in the Tampa Bay area, the range masters would ask me to accompany a newbie out out to the range and and give him/her some pointers. I was happy to do so and neither the range master or I were concerned about the ethnic background of the individual. All the regular shooters were more than willing to do the same.

It's very easy to paint all gun owners with a broad brush. While it is true that some gun owners are indeed racist it is stereotyping to say that all are. Intelligent people do not stereotype except as a last resort in an argument that they are losing. Even then it is a dishonest tactic and far more suited for conservatives than progressive liberals.

11. Not sure who called you a racist, but I'm sure it wasn't me.

Still, denying the racism and the "right-wingism" in the gun culture is just silly. Not all gun owners are racists, obviously, but I do think people should stop pretending that Ted Nugent is just some random guy that nobody in the gun culture cares about or pays any attention to.

Just curious. How do you feel about the fact that pro-gunners frequently call pro-controllers "bigots"? And not just in the abstract, they actually accuse other DUers of bigotry.

19. No, that comment was not directed toward you. ...

Also in my post that you are replying to, I did say:

While it is true that some gun owners are indeed racist it is stereotyping to say that all are.

Ted Nugent is a poor spokesman for the NRA and he is probably one of the reasons that the NRA has only 4.3 million members out of the 80 million gun owners in this nation.

While gun control is a very emotional topic, it can be discussed without either side using insulting terms.

There used to be standards but they have been increasingly ignored for a while now. So-called 'citizen journalists' are not helping to increase those standards either.

32. "Professional Societies" do not mean there are or ever have been required standards to

call yourself a journalist. Are there exams, licenses, or even agreed to standards? Hardly.

Over history in the US anyone can be a journalist at any time. Yes public agencies issue media or press credentials, but that is based on organization, not the person.

The epitome of the "professional journalist" are those like Pegler. He even won a Pulitzer Prize
