I'm thinking of hitting the funshow this weekend in search of a new slim pistol for conceal carry. Now I must say if there's a XDS in 45 somewhere at the show that's what I'd like to pick up most. But assuming all the XDs (9 and 45's ) are out for recall I doubt there'll be one around.
Below are a few I'm thinking about in 9mm. Kahr CM9 , M&P Shield, and Nano.
I've already checked out the Nano and Sheild, but haven't found a Kahr yet. I really liked the M&P...but like the idea of the weight of the Kahr.
Of course there's always the offhand chance I'll find something else like a 442 in my price range. Or maybe I'll find a 45 in some other size that I'd rather have. LOL
I'm also still on the fence on a 40 or 9mm, in the shield.
Any recommendations on a "slim" (not 26/27/9c/40c thick) personal defense pistol?

(17,502 posts)Smith in .40 and the Beretta in 9mm.

(15,396 posts)Just because I don't / won't shoot my Sig in 40, and can't get the Shield in my favorite caliber.
I thought the Nano was a little front heavy for my taste, and really liked the almost full length grip of the shield.
I hate picking out a new carry firearm, I've been known to put 40 hours in research on picking out a new toilet, and 6 moths on vehicles. I've already put probably 120 hours of internet and gun shop time on different pistols over the past few months. And as always I just can't decide when lives are on the line.
I've read lots of not so good stuff about the Kahr's lately, and of course there's always the disgruntled owners on different forums.
I've owned an M&P 9c and really loved the pistol but found it just too thick for summer carry the way I go about CC. A quarter inch difference in thickness makes a world of difference between looking like I have a cellphone and looking like I have a prosthetic hip. LOL

(15,396 posts)several years back then found a 9c and fell in love.
If I'd picked the PPS then I'd not be having this search today.

For me they're the cream of the plastic fantastic pistols.

(36,281 posts)Why the admin allows you NRA types to post this crap here is beyond me.
oneshooter
(8,614 posts)Because only 1/3 of Democrats own guns, and NONE of them are enthusiasts.
If you can refer to posters here, as "nra types", and its just hunky dory, can we refer to you as "gun grabber types" in an equally unsubstantiated way? Note to jurors, I have not done so.
Or would that violate community double standards?
Ranchemp.

(15,396 posts)I find it funny you were the first one to post about the NRA.
MY thread is about my next personal protection firearm...a topic allowed in the RKBA forum.
Let's not derail this thread....if you have a favorite personal protection firearm to recommend then do so. I'm always open to other progressives opinions.

(49,445 posts)...is that they're usually so good, all that's left to argue about is minor details.
You can try the Ruger LC9; that's a single-stack 9mm.

(15,396 posts)One of ky favorite brands...3 of the last 6 or 8 pistols have been rugers. That includes a SR45 a few months back...and their soon to be new plant is 141 miles away.

(10,164 posts)...is a Smith & Wesson 908, and I like it quite a bit. However, you'd have to find a used one, as I don't believe it's been in production for a while. It's a bit larger than the models you're looking at, though...and I've been considering a Nano, myself.

(15,396 posts)I just made a thread to see what people's opinions on a quality single stack easy to conceal self defense personal safety device.
Just celebrated my 15yr anniversary at the hospital and received a nice little check. What better way to spend the funds than something to protect me and my family...
Anyway I just found out Kahr has a CM45 coming out soon (It may be already on the market) A 45 would be of great interest to me if I'm going to limit myself to a 5-7 round magazine. I need something a little thinner for summer carry, but with a little more ummph than the LCP I currently carry.
There's a gunshow in Roanoke thought it would be a great opportunity to handle all the logical candidates. Plus It'll be a great time to pick up Christmas gifts for all the guys in the shop. (Normally I buy a box of their favorite self defense ammo)

(6,185 posts)It was a range rental at a LGS and only had around 500 rounds put through it. Just about the right amount for break in on a Kimber 4 inch to save me polishing the feed ramp.
I originally started looking for a 3-inch sub compact in 45 ACP, but ran into a lot of negative comments on FTF problems and FTE via stove piping. I guess getting the reliability we take for granted in a 1911 gets a lot harder to achieve with that short 3" barrel and recoil. The 4 inch pro size, no such problems after a week of combing the web and asking questions.
The owner gave me a fair deal on it. It cleaned up really nice, all stainless, came with Novak Night sights and I may add Crimson Trace grips at some point, when the budget allows it. Picked up a nice Galco Avenger OWB Holster custom made for the Kimber Pro series.
It will be one of my carry pieces, along with my older Colt .380 Pocketlite, an identical 1911 pattern without the grip safety, come January when Illinois finally joins the rest of the country with CCW.

(11,181 posts)I can't imagine a hospital that would allow an employee to walk around armed. Of course, you could be a patient, which would make more sense, but then what hospital rewards it's patients with checks, let alone internet access.
I haven't figured out yet if you are really as nutty as you claim, or are just a wind up artist who's never been near a gun. I'm leaning toward the latter.
Bottom line is, you don't belong here.
ileus
(15,396 posts)Gave me a check for years
of loyal service. Can't carry while at work, I do carry a Kimber pepper blaster while I'm here.
This firearm I need now is to replace a 9c that I traded back in the spring.
Wanting a thinner CC firearm but with more punch than my LCP has.
As a 2A progressive liberal where do you think I belong? Have I at any point and time claimed I was nutty? That's twice you've offended me...now I'm really sad at you.

(6,185 posts)It's got to be pretty rare to have an entire jury think you were acting like a jerk in the Gungeon and hit you with a shut out.
Oh well. He can go back to Bansalot and claim victim hood with no chance of being hidden as long as he spews the approved Bloombergian talking points and hates on the Gungeon folk.
Me, I'm taking my new Kimber Pro for a test drive this weekend, getting ready for Illinois CCW.
I always wonder what gun grabbers do on the weekends for fun, while we're shooting and talking to the folks in the next couple of lanes?

(11,181 posts)It is a group to discuss RKBA and gun control with the overall heading of public safety. It is not a place for idiots who promote carrying loaded weapons around for no good reason. It is not a place for imbeciles who think giving little children guns is all part of "family fun". It is not a place for charlatans, like Ileus, to promote handguns, which are killing tools, as personal protection devices. Shame on him and those who defend his childish nonsense.
hack89
(39,171 posts)nice rant by the way - you managed every gun controller meme possible.
Starboard Tack
(11,181 posts)And carrying a gun in public for any reason is public endangerment. I'm not saying it is never justified, but even when it is, the public is still endangered.
hack89
(39,171 posts)Now that concealed carry is universal in America, we will see what happens. The smart money is that gun violence will continue to decline and CCW holders will continue to be less violence the the general public.
Fortunately we live in a country where we have choices. I understand you choose differently. But your irrational fears do not trump the rights of others.

(15,396 posts)And I feel my life and the lives of my family are good and sufficient reason for carrying a defensive firearm in public.
You know our government wouldn't allow citizen ownership of any device made for killing.

(14,912 posts)Efficient Living Group, yet he posts very little in there, as opposed to *this* being his "Favorite Group"! Imagine that, would ya?!?! 196 posts in the last 90 days, with 126.. or 64% of his posts are in here. That's some real dedication to his group he's hosting, huh?
Oh...wait! *maybe* he's trying to get us to live more frugally by not spending our own money on whatever we WANT to spend it on? It might just be a case of "having the Sadz" because we don't *have to*, or *want to* "live frugally"?
Even more curious, an advanced search of his Group, in which he is the Top Host, shows only 5 posts from him from Dec. 2011 through today, and thay were between Jan - Nov of 2012. Maybe the Admins should remove him from that spot and give it to someone more deserving, who actually participates in the group... what do you think?

(10,164 posts)But then again, that's not really a perfect fit, either, for discussions on guns for personal protection. Hunting and target shooting would be closer. A lot of posters would prefer that this subject (guns for protection) not be discussed at all on DU. For them, I have the world's smallest violin...
Kaleva
(36,298 posts)If the primary purpose of the OP is to discuss a gun or guns to be used for self/home defense, then I think it's okay because of this part of the group SOP:
"the use of firearms for self-defense"
Some months ago I had written about the Mosin-Nagant but I posted that over in Outdoor Life because I was talking about them in general and not specifically about their use for self defense.

(15,396 posts)The M&P Shield in 9mm, 389...
If I'd have any experience with Kahr I'd have come home with a CW45 @ 349.00 < I may have to revisit this if I can ever find one to fire, I couldn't tell if I liked the trigger or not, but it felt good in the hand and I thought the quality was pretty good.
I can't wait to hit the range tomorrow and break it in...

(26,602 posts)I've been coveting an M&P (full size) for a while, based just on the looks - I haven't even touched one. Rumor is that my employer will be kicking down a retroactive raise in December, so a shopping trip may be in the offing. Let us know how you like your new self-defense equipment...

(15,396 posts)but made a great trade this spring I couldn't turn down...
I love the ergo's on the M&P series, they just feel so darned good. I plan on getting a fullsized 45 or 9 one of these days. FWIW my 9c never failed, and it eat every cheap walturd brand I fed it.
While the Shield doesn't feel as nice as the larger M&P's I really like it's size and initial quality.
I come real close to switching completely and picking up a 442 or 642 @399
